How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If your trimmer engine idles, but stalls on throttle, check the following parts: the gasket, primer bulb, fuel filter, air filter, fuel vent, fuel line, and carburetor. The repair and symptom guide will help you better identify the part needed to be replaced and how.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
The most common problem with a strimmer not starting is that there`s a problem with the fuel mix. Double check that you`ve used 40 parts fresh unleaded petrol to 1 part 2-stroke oil (40:1). Check the petrol you`ve used isn`t stale.
Air filter Once blocked with dust and debris, it cannot supply the required amount of oxygen to your trimmer` engine resulting in power loss. Find the air filter, take out this component, clean and reassemble it. Replace the part if you cannot reuse it. Follow this step regularly to avoid any problems in the future.
The “Bog” simply means the engine is not receiving enough fuel when you go to wide open throttle. While there are other issues that may cause similar reactions within the carburetor, often the problem can be traced back to the accelerator pump system. Incorrect adjustment is the typical culprit.
The most likely culprit is a dirty or clogged air filter. Issues with your fuel pump or fuel filter can also cause your engine to idle then die with any throttle. If you have an older car, it could also be a bad carburetor.
Sometimes the spark arrestor screen can become clogged up itself. Common symptoms include lack of power, especially under load; poor acceleration; engine won`t come up to full RPM; and higher than normal “spit back” through the carburetor.
If the engine is running fast (revving high):
Make sure that the choke is disengaged and the throttle hold has been reset by pressing the trigger. You can check the throttle cable to make sure there are no kinks found in it – however this requires a mechanical proficiency to strip down the machine uncovering the cable.
When the throttle body is not operating effectively, one of the tell-tale signs is poor or low idling. This includes the engine stalling after coming to a stop, a very low idle after starting, or stalling when the accelerator pedal is pressed down rapidly.
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.
The fuel line may be clogged from stale fuel deposits, more reasons to cause your chainsaw to cut out when applying throttle. If a fuel line is cracked, it will leak gasoline and draw air from outside into the fuel line. If the line is leaking fuel, it needs to be replaced.

Need to replace fuel lines on my Troy Bilt gas hedge trimmer. Where can I get replacement fuel lines… or better yet… what size are the lines and where can I buy a few feet of the lines. Note: I have reviewed the parts assembly and it would seem to indicate I have to replace the entire handle assembly (Part #1) instead of just buying replacement hose(s). Any help to resolve my issue would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance
ANSWER : Replacement fuel lines should be readily available at your local lawnmower repair shop. Your TroyBilt hedger uses fuel line that is 3/32″ (2.4mm) interior dimension, 3/16″ (4.8mm) outside dimension, with a 3/64″ (1.2mm) wall dimension.
Most manufacturers don’t offer replacement line, only fuel tank assemblies. Find your local shop, and try to get the TYGON brand…it is yellow. Tygon lasts the longest. You should be able to buy it by the foot for less than $2 per foot. You will need 2 feet of hose to replace both lines.
Make sure to clean the in-tank filter when replacing hoses.
Good luck.

How to get new plastic fuel lines in fuel tank in my weed-eater hedge trimmer. the line is larger than the hole in the tank.
ANSWER : Oftentimes it helps to use scissors to trim back a portion of the new line. Start at the bottom and cut upwards at an angle. Put some lubricant (WD40, perhaps) on the line and slide the sharp point into the fuel tank. Using needle nose pliers, grab the line and pull it through. This will only work if you have the correct size line. If the new line you are using is too large, you probably can’t pull it through.
