How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

One of the most common problems, especially because rototillers often sit unused for months, is stale fuel or a clogged carburetor. If you know you have fresh fuel, you can check for carburetor blockage by spraying a small amount of carb cleaner into the intake and attempting to start the engine.
Tiller: Why won`t my tillers wheels or tines turn? A broken drive belt, bad transmission or problem with the clutch cable can prevent a tiller`s wheels and tines from turning. Check the drive belt and replace it if it`s worn or broken.
Forward and reverse tine rotary tillers operate exactly as described. Forward rotating tines, like those on the RT3062, rotate forward on the shaft in the same direction the tractor is traveling. Reverse rotating tines, like those on the RT3062R, rotate on the shaft in the opposite direction the tractor is traveling.
Forward rotation tillers are low-duty tillers best suited for small jobs like garden spaces and soil that is already well aerated. They require more passes to get the desired results. Whereas, reverse rotation tillers are heavy-duty tillers perfect for large-scale jobs.
If the wheels on your tiller move but the tines don`t spin, you may need to replace tine shaft clevis pins or replace the transmission. The tiller`s transmission drives the wheels and the tine shaft, so you`ll likely need to replace the transmission when the wheels spin but the tine shaft doesn`t move.
Rotary tillers break through a variety of soils to create a workable area for gardens and flowerbeds. After repeated use, the tines, or blades, dull and wear down. No matter what type or brand of tiller you own, these blades will need to be sharpened or replaced to keep your machine working properly.
If the rotary tiller still doesn`t start:

Check that the fuel tank isn`t empty: if necessary, add fuel. The fuel must be fresh, of good quality and clean: make sure that no dirt, water or incompatible fuel (such as petrol-oil mixture, if the engine is a 4-stroke) gets into the tank.

Tiller: Why does my tiller turn the soil poorly? Worn or damaged tines, broken tine shaft clevis pins, a worn drive belt, a faulty transmission, a problem with the clutch cable, improper depth-stake setting or bad soil conditions can cause a tiller to do a poor job turning the soil.

I just bought a used Pony tiller. It runs good, but after tilling for a couple no hours the forward and tines just stopped. Had not hit anything. It goes in reverse and the tines work in reverse, but I cannot get it to do anything forward???
ANSWER : Check under the metal or plastic cover just behind the engine. This covers the forward and reverse belts. Your belt either broke, jumped off fthe pulley, or needs a tension adjustment.

After a few weeks of no use, my tiller started on the first or second pull but even after long warm up, it stalled as soon as I trottled up. This happens even on the stand with no resistance/load. The machine is not jammed–the tiller blades turn while the machine is idling. It just dies as soon as I try to work.

I have a two cylinder Mantis tiller. It has locked up and the cord is locked. I am unable to pull the cord. Any suggestions? I was in the process of using the tiller when it felt as if it were running out of gas. It stopped on its own, and then it was locked up and I was unable to pull the cord.
ANSWER : Check the oil, if not full fill it, take the shroud off, should be for bolts, fit a socket on it with a breaker bar or ratchet and turn it a few times, then reassemble and start. Hope this helped Tim

My tiller stopped moving during use, after enitting a puff of smoke. The motor still works well; it does not move, however. Is there a belt that could be burned out? Is this something that can be attempted by an amateur or should best be left to the experts?
ANSWER : You don’t say where the smoke came from but check out the worm gear box and see if gear is eaten up. Supposed to be greased regularly but gear can wear out over time or overloaded digging. . Don’t know your model but here is manual on one of them. See if it helps. Look fer it!http://mantis.com/global/assets/owners_manuals/08_tillers/401702.pdf
