HelloWhether the pull cord on your Poulan weed eater is broken, worn out or not pulling, you will be faced with changing this cord. This cord is critical for getting your trimmer started, so you should always make sure it’s working properly. The starter cord sits on a pulley that’s tightened by a recoil spring inside that pulley. If either of these parts is broken you will need to replace them as well.Use the screwdriver to remove the starter cover screws. The starter cover on most Poulan models is at the back end of the engine, near the muffler. Take off the starter cover and the starter cord should come off with it, because it’s attached to the starter cover.Pull out the entire length of starter cord from the pulley. Locate the tab in the pulley’s center that locks this cord in place. Pop this up with your finger or the screwdriver. Pull the cord off of the pulley.Use the screwdriver to open up the plastic starter handle off of the old cord. Untie the rope from the metal insert that’s inside the handle. Discard the old cord.Insert the new cord into the same center access hole that you pulled the old cord out of. Pull it all the way through and lock the center tab by pushing it down into place over the new cord.Thread the new cord through the metal insert and the plastic handle. Tie a regular, overhand knot in the end, but keep the knot loose. Push the knot inside the handle, tighten it against the metal insert and close the handle over the knot and metal insert.Wind the cord around the pulley all the way. Hold the cover in one hand and pull out the cord two full pulley rotations to set the tension on the recoil spring. Repeat if necessary to get the proper tension on the cord. Screw the starter cover back into place over the engine.

How does the spring attach to the pull cord after you get it wound back up?
ANSWER : The outer spring should attach to the cord spool in a recess or post. Wedge it to keep it from unwinding, attach the inner cord end and thread it around the spool until nearly wound. Feed it out of the cord port and pull the cord out which winds the spring some more. Make sure the cord can reach full extension without binding the spring (don’t let go of the cord!!), clamp the cord with locking pliers, and fit the handle. Melt the cord ends to prevent the knots from pulling out and be sure the cord turns the engine in a CCW direction when pulled!!! Hope this helps!
Poulan pro 18″ saw locked up.. help
ANSWER : I had the same issue with two of these Poulan 18″ saws. I took the first one back as it never pulled to start. The second just happened today. I took the bar and chain off, then unscrewed the casing around the pull start. When I tried to manually move the fly-wheel, I couldn’t do it. After trying to take the fly wheel off, I discovered that the small black piece just to the side of the fly-wheel was pushing up against the fly wheel. I pushed this piece back while tightening the screws that had loosened around it. The pull and fly wheel have no interference now and it works like new. Hope this helps.
Poulan chainsaw 18″ 42 cc, pro gas filler cap?
ANSWER : Yep they swell after a while and will not screw in or out!
Sand the threads down so that the circumference is reduced with a course file or plumbers cloth, chamfer the threads a bit on the edges. A new one will do the same thing after a while so just fix the one you have.

Poulan pro 42 cc, no spark – Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"
ANSWER : Try diss connecting the earth cut out wire from the ignition unit and try for a spark again, this will rule out the switch and any trapped wires, re set the air gap between the unit and the flywheel to 0.3mm, if there is still no spark the unit is bad and will require replacment, they are normally only held on with a couple of allen screws, and either bolted to the cylinder or the crankcase.
