Craftsman mowers are powered by a gasoline engine that contains a choke in the carburetor. A choke controls the fuel-to-air ratio by closing or opening a flap in the carburetor.
The retainer nut on most of our riding mower blades are a 5/8″ thread diameter. This sized thread diameter nut normally requires a 15/16″ wrench or socket tool in order to remove/install.
An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment. Leaving the choke on while operating will result in excessive fuel consumption, irregular engine power performance and eventually may even damage the engine.
Use a garden hose or a pressure washer to loosen grass clumps on your deck`s underside. If there`s debris that can`t be removed with water, use plastic tools, like a brush or ice scraper, to scrub it away. Give your deck a final rinse. Then be sure to dry it completely so that rust doesn`t form.
Turn the adjusting lock nut clockwise to raise the mower and counterclockwise to lower it. Measure from the blade to the ground again on both sides and adjust until the difference between the blade tip heights are within ⅛ -inch. Rotate the blades so that their direction is now front to back.

The Craftsman 4.5hp mower uses either a Champion model RJ19LM or J19LM spark plug, or equivalent, with the gap set at . 030 inch.

Blade removal cannot get blades off
ANSWER : That is because you need to hold the blade(s) still when torquing loose the blade bolts. Some of those are nasty to “crack” loose. But with the proper “6 point” socket (12 point is not recommended at ALL!) and leverage? Piece o’ cake! Also craftsman does make a special tool to lock the blades down to remove them. There are also generic ones for riding type mowers (I’ve seen them at Lowe’s) blade removal. Preventing the crankshaft from spinning is paramount to getting the blades off (Not to mention safe?) It depends on your level of mechanical expertise. Experienced? then you can do it, Not experienced? Go get the special tool to prevent the blades from spinning. Life is so much easier when you got the right tool for the job!

I need to get the blade of the lawn mower sharpened.Any tips on how to disconnect the blade fropm the lawn mower?
ANSWER : There is a jig that you can buy that makes this job SO much eaiser. It is a universal jig that clamps onto the deck and keeps the blade from spinning so you can use a ratchet to remove the nut holding the blade on. One name brand is called a “Blade Hog”. You should be able to find one of these at one of the bog box hardware stores.

Which direction do you turn the bolt holding lawn mower blades on?
ANSWER : Clockwise to tighten. Remove the spark plug wire before working under there! Use a piece of wood to jam the blade against the housing so it will not turn.
