One of the most common reasons gearbox seals leak is not the seal at all. It`s actually a problem with the gearbox bearings. If bearings wear due to torque overload or lubrication problems or misalignment or excessive overhang load, then they can`t hold shafts and gears in place.
The purpose of an oil seal is to prevent lubricant leaks by closing in the spaces between a transmission`s parts. The seals also prevent dirt and other contaminants from clogging up the unit.

The most common source of a transmission leak due to faulty installation is from the transmission pan. The pan is not mounted correctly or incorrect bolts are used to secure it. Something as simple as these bolts will make transmission fluid leak from the pan.
Adding a bottle of one One Seal Stop Leak or Transmission Seal Stop Leak products is often all it takes to seal your leak. Then all you have to do is check your transmission fluid level.
Seals and Other Gaskets

There are various seals and gaskets throughout the transmission system. This might include the rear main engine seal and the front input seal. The rubber may deteriorate or something could come out of alignment and cause a transmission fluid leak.

A rear main seal leak will cause oil to drip from the bottom of the bellhousing at the front of the transmission. If you have drips coming from in front of the bellhousing, locate those leaks, stop them and clean the engine. After a few hundred miles you can check again for leaks to see if you still have any.
Seal Material: Where the Rubber Meets the Drive

Lip seals are typically made of polymer rubber, like HBR (High-cis Polybutadiene Rubber), Butadiene, or FKM (Viton®). In most gearboxes, a garter spring sits behind the rubber lip. The spring holds the rubber against the shaft, increasing sealing pressure.

The standard seal for gearboxes is currently the lip seal, which uses the host equipment shaft as the primary sealing surface and leads directly to wear and tear. ISOMAG bearing seals rotate with the shaft to avoid metal-to-metal contact — providing a true long-term solution and significant upgrade.
An oil leak from the main seal, also known as the rear crankshaft seal, will usually drip from where the transmission connects to the engine, though it may show up elsewhere, such as on the oil pan.
A transmission leak will not get better on its own. If it goes unchecked, vehicle operation will eventually be affected, and you may find yourself with an expensive repair. So, while it may be safe to drive with a leaking transmission, it`s not advisable, and you shouldn`t put off fixing the problem.
If the amount of oil added is too much, a large amount of lubricating oil will accumulate on the shaft seal and the joint surface, then cause gearbox oil leaking.
Oil is leaking from the gearbox housing; it is definitely a crankshaft engine oil seal leak, which can also be called a gear oil leakage.

ANSWER : Well hopefully it’s not the transmission, as sometimes these tend to go. Another common but cheaper repair are the two bearings where the tines connect to the unit.

MORE THAN LIKELY.. The bearing is located above the worm gear housing, the part connected to the tines beneath the guard. This removal can be somewhat frustrating but if you remove it and remove the engine flange you’ll be able to manually spin the drive shaft and see if it’s the worm gear housing/lower bearings or if it’s the more likely bearing on the clutch drum or the clutch itself.
