What to Do If Your Tractor Won`t Start, Just Clicks. If your John Deere won`t crank and all you hear are clicking sounds when you turn the key, you likely have a bad battery or a bad connection somewhere between the battery and the starter. Double check that the alternator and battery connections are clean and tight.
The starter motor is initiated by the ignition key. The motor draws an electric current via the battery. The ignition has to turn on and off quickly to avoid sparking which could be hazardous, or running down the battery – so will have a return spring to release the key and turn off the starter motor.
Usually a rapid clicking noise is a good indication that your starter motor isn`t getting enough electrical current to engage – basically your solenoid is trying to engage but can`t make the connection.
Starter motor issues can manifest as a single, loud click emanating from the starter relay or starter solenoid. Usually, this points to a faulty relay or solenoid, or a bad or jammed starter motor. Solution: Rock your car back and forth or tap the starter motor with a hammer and try starting the engine again.
1 Start motor engages but the engine doesn`t turn
The simplest cause of this sort of fault is a loose or corroded electrical connection. If there is a fault with the internal windings of the starter motor, bad brushes, or other electrical faults, the starter motor may lack the torque to crank the engine.
Signs of a Bad Starter Solenoid
It usually means there`s a faulty connection in the solenoid. Another common symptom is a single clicking noise when you turn the key.
If your starter relay has gone bad, the electrical signal will never make it from the battery to the starter motor. As a result, your engine won`t turn over – no matter how many times you turn the key. A faulty relay often produces an audible clicking sound when you turn your car.
If Your Starter Clicks, the Usual Causes Are:
A weak battery. Loose, damaged, or corroded battery cables. A faulty starter solenoid or relay. A bad starter motor.
The clicking noise comes from a part called the starter solenoid. The solenoid connects the battery to the starter motor when the solenoid is energized. The key switch and the safety switches in the starter circuit combine to energize the solenoid. If the solenoid is clicking, the circuit that triggers it is working.
If the vehicle won`t start at all, listen for a clicking noise when you turn the ignition switch on. If the click is missing, the likely problem is the solenoid. On the other hand, if you hear a click but no fuel is pushed through the injector lines, and nothing is clogging the lines, it`s time to replace the pump.
