Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The lever your speaking of is the disengage for the Hydro pump and it needs to be in the in position. Make sure the drive belt is on the transmission pulley. It can be accessed by removing the battery under the seat and removing the battery box. Looking under is not usually not good enough as it is hard to tell if the belt is in the pulley. This applies to most mowers. Hope this will help

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

You Lose Power in the Middle of Mowing:

Here`s why this happens and what you can do: Dirty Air Filter on Your Lawn Mower: Clean or replace. Dirty Spark Plug: Clean or replace. Build Up of Clippings & Debris: Clean underside of your lawn mower deck as noted above.

Dirty air filter

If your mower loses power and then won`t restart, it might be due to dirty air filters. This is a simple problem to check and fix. Make sure the filters are clean and in good working order and try again. If this was the problem, it should start up again easily.

Failure of any mechanical component, a broken hose, or clogged filter will cause tractor hydrostatic transmission problems. But the most common issue will be the oil itself. In the transmission section of your operator`s manual, you`ll find a section that covers oil viscosity.
The spark plugs are worn or damaged

If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.

Loud popping, knocking, and stuttering noises from the hood of your vehicle are cause for concern, and could be a sign of major engine damage.
At some point in time, nearly every lawnmower owner will be pushing the mower along and suddenly hear it sputter as the engine stops. One of the most common causes is a dirty filter.
If the engine dies when the blades engage, it could be the result of a damaged safety switch. The first step in assessing the safety switch is to make sure it is plugged in securely. The switch is located underneath the seat, and you may have to remove the seat to reach it.
Condensation inside the gas tank is one culprit, but moisture can also enter the system through a loose or ill fitting gas cap. The best solution is to drain the mower`s gas tank and refill it with fresh gasoline. A clogged fuel filter can also cause a mower engine to die.
If your lawn mower starts, runs for a while, then dies, check the ignition coil, gas cap, and spark plug. One or more of these parts could be causing your problem. Follow our repair and symptom guide to help you fix this.
A dirty air filter is one of the most common causes of a poorly running lawn mower, since it starves the engine of the oxygen needed for combustion. Fuel Filter: Check the fuel filter on the mower to make sure it`s clean, and replace it if needed.

Ok i have a problem with lt 1000 craftsman lawnmower. the tractor starts up runs great just when you put in gear or try to put blades in motion it shuts down can someone plz help
ANSWER : Check for a safety switch near your shift handle for the gears . most have a kill switch for when your mowing and go to drive in reverse with the blades on . when you go to do this it puts the shift handle against a metal switch that closes a normally open circut that ends up grounding the coil to kill the engine .. easiest thing to try and dont cost to try . is to unplug this ( temporary ) my mtds have 2 wires not sure if craftsman has these or not . but if so just unplug it and it should work and run like normal if this is what the issue is .

The lawnmower won t start after pulling the start up cord . changed the spark plug it still won t start
ANSWER : Try a touch of starting fluid right into the carburator by taking the air filter off. If it then starts but wont run or stay running, the reservoir below the carb should be removed to clean at and the pinhole in the intake tube above the bowl nut. This is the most common problem with lawnmower start problems, the pinhole can be unplugged with one wire from a wire brush. Be careful with the gas, at least pinch off the gas hose with a vise grips while removing the carb bowl.. Never use a droplight around gasoline.
