Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower

Recently the tractor while in forward drive, started jerking at random. Once in a while at first. Now it’s about 2 to 4 seconds apart. If you can imagin towing a 200 lb. block with a bungy cord. Very frustrating. I’ve cleaned all the grass clippings collected around all moving parts around the trans as well as around the deck. Maybe I’ve missed something.

Would appreciate a solution.
Thanks in advance

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Inspect your drive belt. You could have some bad spots in the belt. A new belt will probably solve your problems. Also check your pulleys for any oil on them that would cause slipping.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A pulley that is binding will cause the lawn tractor to jerk forward. To check for a binding pulley, start by disconnecting your battery, and remember to start with the negative cable first. Now you can remove your mower deck. Remove your drive belt and check the inside condition of the pulleys.
The reasons why mower is not moving forward or reverse is that the battery is dead, or due to clogged fuel line. Additionally, malfunctioning transmission, or a broken drive belt, also a faulty spark plug, even when friction wheel isn`t in contact with the friction plate, or damaged Tires.
If the mower vibrates when you engage the cutting blades, there might be a problem with the blade drive system. Deck vibration can be caused by an unbalanced blade, worn pulley or mandrel, bad blade belt or debris caught inside a pulley. Loose nuts or bolts on the pulleys, mandrels or blades can also cause vibration.
The fault could be a dirty spark plug, air filter or carburetor, or it could be related to the quality of the gasoline used. Slow starting can also be the result of a failure to clean the blades. In most cases, you should be able to restore performance yourself.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Check for bent or damaged belt idler brackets, a missing, broken, or worn idler tension spring, and service as needed. If these do not resolve the situation, the problem may be with internal components of the transmission.
If you hear strange noises coming from your mower deck, it may be a sign that the spindle is damaged. A bad spindle can produce grinding, rattling, or squeaking sounds, which indicate that the bearings are worn out or the spindle is bent.
The first thing you want to check is the oil level. Low engine oil is one of the main causes of engine knocking so you`ll want to check this before assuming you need extensive repairs. Once your mower has sat long enough for the engine to cool, you`ll want to remove the oil fill cap and dipstick.
If the engine starts, but does not run smoothly, it means that the spark plug and ignition system are in order and you need to look elsewhere for the source of the problem. The usual culprit is air intake or fuel system related.
Check the Battery

The battery is the next stop when investigating a slow cranking mower. A weak battery cannot sustain enough charge to spin the starter mower and turn the mower`s crankshaft. Mower batteries last around four years, so one that is older may be ready for replacement.

The governor system is like a cruise control system. It maintains the speed of your lawn mower or outdoor power products.
