The silver part of the muffler turns and turns but will not come off. mower was a refurbished. mower purchased 4 years ago and suddenly started to smoke but I cant not remove the muffler to replace it.

Afterfire occurs after the engine has been shut off. Common Causes of Afterfire: Shutting off the engine at high RPM, causing fuel to pump through the engine for ignition. Gasoline that contains alcohol has a tendency to ignite easier, which can cause afterfire.
With the absence of a muffler, you can still operate your lawn mower, but the sound will be louder. At this stage, no significant damage is rendered to your device. However, if this issue persists, it will wreak great havoc on your lawn mower, as shown by broken components in the engine system, like deforming valves.
The reason the muffler is glowing red is because the exhaust temperature is off the chart. This (highly likely) means that the ignition timing is out, or the fuel mixture is too lean.
If the starter motor spins but does not crank the engine, you likely have a problem with… Faulty or damaged battery. To address this issues, check the battery and charging system for problems.
When an engine is running rich, it has too much fuel and too little air, which slows down the combustion process. When combustion doesn`t happen in a timely manner, the exhaust valve opens while the air-fuel mixture is still igniting, causing this explosion to “spill” out of the cylinder, making a loud popping noise.
To determine if your muffler needs to be replaced, remove the muffler (while cold) and shake it; there should be little or no noise heard, and a limited amount of rust/debris coming from the inside.
While mufflers do not change the amount of fuel your vehicle consumes, mufflers affect gas mileage because they can improve the vehicle`s fuel economy.
This means there is too much fuel and not enough air being burned in the engine. The unburned fuel exits through the tailpipe which looks like black smoke. Leaving this can create poor performance and an increase in fuel consumption.
White smoke usually means coolant is getting into the combustion chambers of your vehicle. This generally happens because of a cracked or leaking head gasket, which allows coolant to seep into your cylinders. In extreme cases, you will need to replace your head gasket.
If you turn the key and hear the starter spinning madly but don`t hear the engine cranking, then the pinion gear isn`t thrusting forward. If you turn the key and hear crunching and gnashing, then the teeth on the pinion gear, or the flywheel, or both, are probably damaged.
If you just hear a whirring sound like the starter motor is spinning without affecting the motor, then the solenoid is either broken, or there`s a wiring issue on the starter itself. Options are: have the starter rebuilt, replace the whole thing, or see if you can track down the wiring issue on the starter.
There are a number of things you may do while operating your mower that can cause a backfire, and there are way to avoid them. The primary cause of a backfire is decelerating too quickly. The simple fix for this is just to lower the engine speed a bit more gradually.
Bad Spark Plug
Over time, a spark plug will wear out and become dirty. When this happens, the combustion system won`t get the spark it needs, leading to timing issues and your generator backfiring. If your spark plug is causing your generator to backfire, replace it.

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim

Engine runs, blades turn but mower will not move
ANSWER : Look in front of back tired on frame, not deck, there are. 2 rods, 1 on each side, rods look like a L, it’s going through a little eye opening, push it backards, mower should move. If rod is pulled through opening and locked in, mower will not move..its a safety. Feather on mower

ANSWER : Check plug on the pto itself.located under the mower near the rear end. contacts probably have dried dirt and mud. if that don’t work, tap it with a hammer,it may be just stuck.Thats what I did and it been working ever since. Hope this helps someone.Let me know.

Power to turn the blades is intermitent. What should I look for?
ANSWER : Loose connection, corrosion on connections. If this machine is new to you, do you have to have the brake or clutch on to activate the blades? I would lean towards wires/connections as the cause of your intermittent problem.

ANSWER : First thing to do is find out if it’s the battery or the mower. Disconnect the battery and leave it overnight. If it’s dead in the morning, you need a new battery. If not, you either have a charging problem (not likely if the battery isn’t dead after using the mower) or you have a current drain.
