If your snow blower is cold, you`ll want to pull out or turn on the choke while you`re starting it. This closes off the air supply to your carburetor, which makes for a much richer fuel mixture. If your snow blower is stored in a heated garage and is warm enough, you should not use the choke.
A snowblower that runs better on half choke likely suffers from a dirty or faulty carburetor. Cleaning or replacing the carburetor will fix the issue.
Remember the choke is closed for starting
Close it fully for cold conditions or a cold engine. Close it only 1/2 or 3/4 for temps of 30 degrees or warmer. And don`t close it if you`re restarting the snowblower less than five minutes after engine shut off.
If you live in a warm climate you may not need a choke. Also, most race vehicles will use a carb without a choke. If you do require a choke, you can choose the one that best suits your needs. If you want more control, you can choose a manual choke.
Pulling the choke lever provides proper fuel-starting mixture when the engine is cold. When attempting to start a cold engine, pull the choke lever outward to close. Slowly return the choke to the open position as the engine warms. Leave the choke in the OFF/OPEN position when starting or restarting a warm engine.

Seems to start easily run for a few minutes and then slow and stop–bulb remains full –gas is good–have tried half choke in case too lean–did not solve–also seems possibly related to the angle I hold it at–seems to cut out quicker if blower tube angled more downward.

MTD snow blower model#31AH5WTG799 blades stoped turning
Look for a broken shear pin. It is usually a bolt that goes through the blade shaft and will break with an overload.
Will only develop power (and run somewhat properly) when the choke is engaged about 90%. Starts fine.
Sounds to me as tho you may have a loose carburetor or another part that is letting air into the system. Check all bolts and screws for tightness. Also, you may need to clean the carburetor or put some cleaner in your gas. Not too much, only about a tablespoon, but check the screws/bolts first.
Snow blower gets bogged down in snow.
It sounds like your engine is running lean, see if you can adjust the high throttle mixture on the carburetor (if possible at all). If there is no adjustment possible, it may be the carb is clogged and needs some service. Try cleaning it or find a new replacement carb for it.
My blower only runs with 3/4 choke even after warm up.
Look on the carb for 2 screws side by side. where those screws go into the carb, it will be stamped with an “H” and “L”. Open the screw that is next to the “H”, counterclockwise about 1/4 turn at a time with the engine running, that should solve it.
While running what setting does the choke lever need to be placed in
Depending on how your unit runs, it may need to be on half choke until the motor warms up. After the motor gets hot it should run with the choke fully off.
Have to run on half choke, just stops if i turn it off.fuel is 25 to 1. thanks alan.
More than likely a small passage way in the carb is clogged. You can try some carb cleaner, but you may need to disassemble the carb and clean it out. Be advised that these passageways are sometimes as fine as a human hair, and almost impossible to clear sometimes. A new carb may be required if it is worth it to you. Sorry.

I’m not to sure about the question. But you say it runs with the chock open. Your engine will only run with the chock open. Can you clarify?
