Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
I think either the bolt holding the left blade onto the spindle is loose, or the cup washers under that bolt are flattened or missing. As a result, the blade is slipping on the shaft and probably making a squeal or squawk. Take off the deck, flip it over, and remove the blades. Note if the bolts seem tight. And look at the washers stacked under the bolts. Replace any missing washers, or flattened cup washer. Make sure the cup washer faces the right way (hollow side toward the blade). Tighten things back up securely – it takes a hefty pull on the end of a 2 foot long wrench to get enough torque.

Worn or broken blade drive belt – If the riding mower blades are not spinning, the blade drive belt may be worn or broken and unable to engage the blades. If the belt is intact, inspect it to see if it`s loose or slipping on the pulleys then replace it with a new one if necessary.
Toothed lawn mower blades are the ideal 3-in-1 blade as they offer the best of all three intended purposes. The high-lift and powerful suction works well for bagging clippings as well as expelling clippings out the side discharge.
What are the Causes for Mower Blades that Won`t Disengage? The causes for mower blade disengagement are the loose engagement lever and the worn-out idler rod and cable. Other causes that can cause these bade problems are missing springs, defective idler arms, and mounting defects.
Belt-the number one cause for your blades not to engage is that your belt is either stretched or loose causing it to slip or fall off completely. Belt could have snapped also. When you are trying to process too much grass/leaves they could pack up under your deck and push off your belt.
Mower blades are spinning 4000 RPMs. An unbalanced blade spinning that fast will cause a significant amount of vibration, which will put stress on yout blade shaft, spindle, and even the engine.
The difference in air pressure across the two sides of the blade creates both lift and drag. The force of the lift is stronger than the drag and this causes the rotor to spin.
Unless your blade is really old, the side with the cutting edge will be visibly sharper and shinier than the other side, which will have a dull and blunt edge. The side of the blade with the blunt edge should always face upwards towards the lawn mower`s deck.
A sharp mower blade cuts easier and produces less engine drag, which means your grass is quicker to cut and your lawn mower will last longer. Dull mower blades tend to increase the likelihood of rigid cuts and uneven grass length, making mowing harder and harder.

I had hit a somewhat hidden stump on the lawn..bending the blade. Took the deck off and replaced the bent blade. Put the deck back on and now the cut seems uneven. It appears that the deck is now uneven. I attempted to follow the directions for a side-to-side leveling. Started with trying to measure the blade height and am struggling with getting to a spot where I can measure the blade on the left side. By looking at the deck, it appears to be uneven. I am struggling with being able to raise the left side of the deck.
ANSWER : I’ve only had luck removeing the deck, turn it upside down. Measure blade, mark, remove blade, insert large pipe over spindle, bend in direction. Re-install blade, and do it all over and over till straight. Measure in several locations.

Cutting unevenly Changed blades now the tractor cutting the grass unevenly.
ANSWER : Set the mower on a known flat piece of concrete. Now look at the deck and the support connections where the deck hangs from from the mower. Should be adjustments such as pins with clips or threaded bolt hangers which will allow you to raise or lower the corner of the deck which is low or high. Conversely you could have put a blade in upside down or left out a washer making one blade higher than the other. Usually an owner’s manual will detail this process. As you just changed your blades, as opposed to wear and tear, likely you did not put it back together exactly as you took it apart.

My mower is a model 917.259541 tractor and the blades currently on it are part #134149. I want to make sure I get the right size to replace them.
