LAWN MOWER PART # 683-04163B FRAME Assembly:RIDER
Mower will not start, battery charged up but only a click when key is turned MTD 42” model
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Check all the wiring connections on the starting system. Start at the battery. Both posts. Then, check where the ground goes to the body of the tractor. Make sure it’s not rusty and making a good connection. Check the wire from the battery to the solenoid. If worse comes to worse, you can take a jumper cable and go from the battery + side and jump right to the starter post where an electrical cable connects. This will let the engine turn over, but make sure you have the mower in neutral and brakes set, with blades OFF!
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If the engine will not crank, you likely have a problem with… Discharged / defective battery or faulty electrical connections. To address these issues, check the battery and charging system for problems. Faulty parts: potentially the safety interlocks, starter motor switch (open circuit) or solenoid.
If your lawn mower battery won`t hold a charge, verify connections are clean and tight first, then connect it to the charger. If it isn`t fully charged within 8 hours, your battery is dead and you`ll need to replace it. If your lawn mower battery does charge fully, the charge should not drain if it is not in use.
Riding Mower Clicks but Doesn`t Crank
When you hear a click as you turn the key, a weak battery, bad starter solenoid, faulty wiring, failed starter motor or a seized engine could be the cause.
If your electric starter does not work, check to ensure the switch is still working and its connections are secured. If the switch is broken or not connected properly, it will not start the engine when engaged. A continuity test can be performed with a multimeter to determine if the switch is faulty or not.
You can also attempt to recover the battery by overcharging the fully charged battery using a low amp trickle charger. Charge the battery for 24 hours using a regulated current of 200mA (milliAmps). This will boost the battery`s terminal voltage to 2.50-2.66 volts per cell and raise the battery`s internal temperature.
The lawn mower`s alternator keeps its battery charged. A few hours of mowing recharges it the same way hours of highway driving can keep your car battery mostly charged.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.
Electric lawnmowers may cut out for two main reasons: A faulty power switch or a loose cable connection. An overheating motor can cause the thermal cut out to trip.
Within the electric start system there is a small rechargeable battery. For electric start to work the battery must have charge.
The most common reason for a clicking sound on a riding mower when you turn the key is a flat battery. Other possible reasons include: Faulty Battery. Dirty / Loose Battery Connection.

I have had a poulan pro 550 series push mower for almost 1 year at the end of the season last year the mower would start briefly and then stop. i have cleaned out the air filter and that did not help.the mower started, i made one revolution around the yard 3/4th of the way the mower quit. I then primed the mower it started then quit and now it will not start at all. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do. Thanks
There is a little spring that works the carburetor arm. If that popped off then the mower will not run.
I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!
Brand new electric power Weed Eater lawn Mower, started up like a champ, started vibrating and was loud, shut it down, now it won’t start. Checked the extension the outlet all seems fine. Didn’t even use it yet. Why will it not start?
Battery no good from factory bad battery connection maybe put together on a Monday or maybe battery internal charger no good
Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.
Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.

Will it stay running with your choke on? if so then clean your carb. if not then look for a blockage from tank to carb. ie fuel shut off, deteriorated fuel line. plugged filter etc
Why wont my mower start and gas comes out of muffler
Carb is flooding out ether bad plug or your carberator needs rebuilt
