MURRAY RIDING LAWNMOWER deck LEVELING
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Get the mower on a flat slab of concrete. Raise the deck all the way. Make sure the blades are on correctly. Measure the distance from each corner of the deck to ground. Lower the deck and take the same measurements. You will find, if you look, some threaded rod/bolt and/or pin settings to make adjustments. Most often the deck is out of whack as someone took it off and did not put it back on correctly. Google the mower’s make and the word “‘manual” if you cannot figure it out. Someone out there will provide you with a manual if you cannot figure it out from looking at it and there will be instructions in the manual as to making the adjustments.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the mower model.
Turn the adjusting lock nut clockwise to raise the mower and counterclockwise to lower it. Measure from the blade to the ground again on both sides and adjust until the difference between the blade tip heights are within ⅛ -inch. Rotate the blades so that their direction is now front to back.
The first step to a beautiful lawn is a level mower deck. Level your mower deck once or twice a season.
Mower deck gauge wheels should be properly adjusted to prevent scalping grass on uneven terrain. The bottom of the wheels should sit approximately 1/8-1/2 of an inch from the ground, depending on your cutting height.
For the first mow of the season, it is better to lower your deck height to about 1.5”. This will help clean up the dead grass as well as allow more light to shine through and really get your lawn to come out of dormancy. After the first cutting of the season, you can raise your deck height to 2-2.5”.
The top setting for most mowers gives a cutting height between 3.25 and 4 inches. This is best for your lawn, but at a setting of 4 inches you may sometimes see some “laying-over” of turf blades that some people find undesirable. For this reason, some people prefer to mow at 3 or 3.5 inches.
What appears to be a mower deck that`s out of whack may really be due to poor tire inflation. Front tires that are too low or rear tires that are overinflated can cause the appearance of a poorly adjusted mower deck. Always check and fill tires with the mower turned off and parked on a flat, level surface.
A ground-level deck is a great way to add some livability to your backyard: it can be a place to barbecue, hang out and entertain, all on a nice flat, level surface that`s clean and safe. If you want to know how to build a ground-level deck, start with the reassuring fact that it`s one of the easiest decks to build.
You`ll need a good quality spade and a rake. You`ll also need a wheelbarrow and a spirit level. You can level soil by patting the back of the spade`s blade onto the surface until it`s firm and flat. Don`t overdo this – you just want the surface firm enough so it won`t be disturbed by the wind.
What is the correct way to lay decking? Any decking board manufacturer or professional will tell you: “The proper way to install a decking board is ridge side down.” The ridges are designed to allow for airflow, to stop moisture sitting in the ridge, and allow for a stronger structure.
Using Shims to Level the Deck Surface
Because the size of joists can vary from board-to-board, you may want to install wood shims to raise the position of decking over low joists. High joists may require you to plane down the surface height of the joist to accommodate a level floor height.

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.
Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.
I have had a poulan pro 550 series push mower for almost 1 year at the end of the season last year the mower would start briefly and then stop. i have cleaned out the air filter and that did not help.the mower started, i made one revolution around the yard 3/4th of the way the mower quit. I then primed the mower it started then quit and now it will not start at all. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do. Thanks
ANSWER : There is a little spring that works the carburetor arm. If that popped off then the mower will not run.
I have a problem leveling my mower deck. I level it at the sides and front .I use the mower and it cuts uneven. mower is deck is out of alignment. less than 1 hour on it.
ANSWER : The deck could be bent, or you will probably have to level the back of the deck as well. Another thing to check is the air in the tires, this can cause an uneven cut. Although the tire may look pumped up, with the weight of a person on the tractor can cause an uneven cut.
I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!
Where is oil drain plug on MTD mower – Mtd LAWN MOWER PART # 683-04163B FRAME Assembly:RIDER
ANSWER : If it isn’t on the bottom of the engine (above the blade) then you don’t have one. This is not that uncommon. When you need to drain the oil, FIRST- pull the spark plug wire off!!! Then remove the dip stick or filler plug and turn the unit upside down and drain the oil.
Lawn mower motor runs good, the drive wheels run good but the blade won’t stay enguaged. Thanks
ANSWER : Check your cable that controls the blade engagement.

ANSWER : Took the mower to the Black and Decker warehouse where they replaced the switch in the handle. It cost $53.73 total.
I have a problem with a Black and Decker electric lawn mower model MM525. While cutting some high grass today, the mower slowed down, then quit and would not restart. I checked the electrical outlet and there was no power–the fuse was burned out in the switch box. I replaced it, tried again, and again it would not start or even give any response at all, but again it blew out the fuse in the box. The fuse is 25A and the mower is only 12A so that’s not an issue, besides, I’ve used this mower from that outlet for about 4 years since I first got the mower and never had any problem before. My question is: is whatever is causing the mower not to start and to blow out my fuse something that can be repaired or should be? Thanks.
ANSWER : Hello blumph,
I can think of only one or two things that are causing your problems. It could either be approx. a $14.00 switch in the handle that has shorted out, or 2 bad brushes $1.75/ea.on the armature (motor). Both are fairly simple fixes with just a screwdriver and maybe pliers. You might also check and see if the power cord has been chafed or damaged and is shorting out.
