17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor – CA Model
After sitting for a while it will restart and run again for a few minutes, Then dies again.
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
This sounds like a fuel filter with just enough dirt in it to allow some gas to seep through, but when the engine is started it will not provide enough to keep it running. Locate and close the spring tabs on either end of the filter. You will need to push something (a small bolt perhaps) in the ends of the fuel lines to prevent gas from coming out on both ends. Elevate them as well.
When you put the new filter own, you will have to use the choke more than usual to pump gas into the filter and up to the carb. If this isn’t it, it is likely the fuel pump. Please write us back and let us know!
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If your lawnmower is starting and then stalling, the most likely issue is the carburetor. The most common issue is that the carburetor is dirty. Here`s what you need to know about how a dirty carburetor can cause a lawnmower to start, then stall out and die.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
Dull, damaged or loose blades. If your blades are not sharp, are damaged or are not properly attached, this may also cause the engine to stop, especially when cutting thicker grass. Making sure the blades are in good condition and are properly attached should also be a part of your annual mower tune-up in the spring.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
Your lawn mower runs for 30 minutes then dies if you are having issues such as a bad spark plug, air problems, a malfunctioning carburetor, or a faulty gas cap. You may even encounter the issue that your lawn mower runs for 5 minutes then dies.
If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.
Other things that could cause this issue are bad fuel, weak/colapsed/kinked fuel line, faulty spark plug, faulty ignition/coil, oil over full, clogged air filter, plugged/dirty carburetor, worn engine parts internal rings/valves/etc.
Condensation inside the gas tank is one culprit, but moisture can also enter the system through a loose or ill fitting gas cap. The best solution is to drain the mower`s gas tank and refill it with fresh gasoline. A clogged fuel filter can also cause a mower engine to die.
Use Carburetor Cleaner
Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

What sort of scarifier is it?
Motor stops, washer was working , full level in oil and good oil. Don’t starts again, apparently barred engine, does not “turn” around.
Whats it like if you remove the pump and gearbox if driven by a gearbox?
Won’t start While using the blower last week it stopped. Afterwards would not start. The unit did not smoke during operation or when it was stopping the last time. Replaced spark plug, took off carb, cleaned and put back together. Still no start… Tried a little starting fluid. Sputtered a little, like 2 sec and then stopped..
This engine may well have seized, remove the muffler and check the condition of the piston skirt through the open exhaust port, any signs of scuffing and the machine will have to come apart to assess the damage.
