How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If your engine runs, but the trimmer blades do not move when the throttle is engaged, the clutch may be broken or improperly tensioned. The clutch is attached to the crankshaft, and engages the gearbox to start rotating once a certain rotational speed is reached.
The first thing to do is to ensure that the battery is fully charged. If after charging the battery you are still experiencing the problem, then it may indicate a fault with either the battery or charger. The defective item will need to be replaced.
Over time, the spark arrestor can become clogged with soot. If the spark arrestor is clogged, the engine may stall or run roughly. To unclog the spark arrestor, remove it and clean it with a wire brush. You may also replace the spark arrestor.
If the drive cable is broken or detached, the trimmer head will not spin. To inspect the drive cable, remove the engine assembly from the shaft and look to see if the cable is in its proper place. Reinstall the cable if it has slipped from its place. If the cable is damaged or broken, it should be replaced altogether.
This can be due to corrosion, scratches or general wear. As a result, the cutting edges of the cutter comb of your blades are no longer sharp, reducing their ability to cut. Sharpening the blade is required to reface the cutting surfaces restore these sharp edges.
If the drive shaft is broken, the string trimmer head won`t spin. The drive shaft is not repairable—if the drive shaft is broken, you must replace it. Need help finding your model number? If the threads on the drive shaft are stripped, the trimmer head will not stay on the shaft.
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.
The quick and easy answer is every 6 months or so. Unlike disposable razors that are made of thin and fragile materials that only withstand a few shaves, the blades of electric razors are much more solid and can last for months.

Power hedge trimmers have a motor that is powered by gas, electricity or a battery, and cut in both directions with a long, toothed blade called a cutting bar. To trim bushes, you simply turn the trimmer on and move the cutting bar over the bush in slow, steady movements.

Blades wont move when power connected. Stripped it down. Motor is fine. I think it must be the gears attached to the blade unit
ANSWER : Either the gears, OR SOME machines have a “CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH” [a safety feature] between the engine and the blades.

IF your machine has this feature, then it’s possible that the clutch has worn out and is slipping so badly that the blade won’t move.

The noise sounds like a much louder humming sound; Temperatures were well below freezing here last night
ANSWER : I’m not sure what your humming is much louder than. But if you had a freeze your pump may have froze and you will need to ck for leaks after thawing. You could have cracked your pump or hurt the seals. After you check for this, you can check for a weak start capacitor in your motor, as the cold can affect these also. Good luck.

When I turn swiitch on the motor hums and kicks braker off
ANSWER : This could be the capacitor that has failed. The capacitor gives
the motor the initial kick in the right direction to get it started. You

flicking the fan blades with a stick in the direction it should spin
just as you switch the pump on. The pump should run normally. You can
get them off Amazon or ebay for around 5 Pounds (GBP)
