Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
If the chain turns at idle
when you let off the throttle it is most probably a problem with the clutch
(the centrifugal clutch springs are weak or broken) or the idle screw is improperly
set (to high)
The clutch has weighted
shoes along with springs holding them back the shoes are activated by the
rotation of the engine. The weights are centrifugally thrown outward when the throttle
is pushed above the set idle rpm. This overcomes the force of the springs
holding the shoes and engages the drive drum connected to a sprocket to turn
the chain. When the throttle is released the spring force pulling on the shoes
pulls back on the shoes and the chain should stop rotating.
Try referring to the manual
for the saw and make sure the idle screw is set properly it is very common for
a older saw’s idle screw to move due to vibrations and use. If that does not
work you will most likely need a new clutch. You can find used or refurbished
“parts saws” or aftermarket clutches on many common sites such as
ebay, craigslist or search for your brand online for a store that sells your specific
clutch.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
An improperly routed belt can cause the engine to die when the blades are engaged. To check belt routing, lower the deck to its lowest setting and remove the belt guard by the drive pulley. Next, lift the belt over the pulley and remove the pins that support the deck at the rear.
The clutch engages the clutch pads to spin the trimmer head. If the clutch assembly is defective, the clutch will not disengage the clutch pads, and the trimmer head will continue to spin, even at low speeds. If the clutch is defective, replace it. (Note: some string trimmers do not have a clutch.
There is a safety switch at the end of the cutter engage lever which has gone faulty and needs replacing, overiding the switch by keeping it pressed in will allow the mower to be operational till replacement switch is fitted.
If the engine starts, but does not run smoothly, it means that the spark plug and ignition system are in order and you need to look elsewhere for the source of the problem. The usual culprit is air intake or fuel system related.
The most common cause of a mower that runs for thirty minutes and then dies is a faulty armature. A faulty gas cap is the second most likely cause.
A pulley that is binding will cause the lawn tractor to jerk forward. To check for a binding pulley, start by disconnecting your battery, and remember to start with the negative cable first. Now you can remove your mower deck. Remove your drive belt and check the inside condition of the pulleys.
The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance.
A Husqvarna riding mower commonly dies when blades are engaged because the grass box is not fully closed. Other possible causes include: Grass Box Misaligned. Grass Box Sensor Wiring Loose.
Why does hunting happen? The most common cause for engine hunting is a blockage in the carburettor. Put simply, this restricts the fuel flow in the carburettor causing the engine to slow down. To try to compensate for this, the engine`s governor opens the throttle to allow more fuel into the engine.
If the mower vibrates when you engage the cutting blades, there might be a problem with the blade drive system. Deck vibration can be caused by an unbalanced blade, worn pulley or mandrel, bad blade belt or debris caught inside a pulley. Loose nuts or bolts on the pulleys, mandrels or blades can also cause vibration.

I started the mower but the blades will not turn. I shut it off and was able to manually turn the blades by hand. I also was able to turn the belt wheel under the engine and have it turn the blades. With it running and me on the seat, they don’t turn. With it running; brake engaged; and I pull the mower switch to engage them, the mower wants to die. Two questions: Is there a swtich on the seat to insure the blades can not turn while no one is on the seat? Is there a key between the belt wheel and the PTO shaft that needs to be replaced? Thank you.
ANSWER : Most all riders have a safety seat switch now and they do malfuction alot. They are under the seat and are ez to replace most of the time. First look for a wire that is grounding due to rubbing a sharp object. That can be fixed with black tape
Good luck!!!
