How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

TO KILL THESE INSECTS: Aphids, Mealybugs, Scales, Spider mites, Thrips, Whiteflies and Sooty mold USE ON THESE PLANTS ONLY: Avocados*, Citrus* (Grapefruits, Lemons, Limes, Oranges and Tangerines), Mangoes** USE THIS AMOUNT: Use 1/2 fl oz (1 Tbs.) Volck Oil Spray plus 1/2 fl oz (1 Tbs.)
Due to the low viscosity of petroleum distillate, it can directly enter the lungs if it is swallowed (this is called aspiration). This can occur during the act of swallowing or when vomiting the substance. Once in the lungs, the substance is very difficult to remove and can cause severe injury to the lungs and death.
Volck Oil (Emulsifiable 80%)

This oil covers the insects body and their egg and closes their respiratory and vital pores and prevents the spore distribution in some fungi. Emulsifiable oil must have 80% of high quality paraffin oil and other fillers and preservatives.

A petroleum-based insecticide, Volck Oil Spray helps control scale insects, mealybugs, whiteflies, sooty mold, red spider mites and insect eggs on fruit and shade trees. Use in late winter or early spring to prevent insects, or spray every two weeks once problems appear for a maximum of four sprays each summer.
Using cooking spray as a replacement for oil and butter can help cut back the calories. Since butter and oil have 100 to 120 calories per tablespoon (respectively), switching to a spray can mean fewer calories (and grams of fat) in your cooking.
Use organic neem oil as often as you need it or once per week to get the infestation under control. Before using neem oil on a suspected pest infestation, make sure you rule out other factors that could be causing your plants duress.
Horticultural oils are relatively non-toxic, and are quite safe to humans and wildlife. They don`t have an objectionable smell, and can be used indoors as well as outdoors. In terms of cost, horticultural oils are fairly cheap compared to other pesticides.
No risk to human health is expected from the use of Cold Pressed Neem Oil because of its low toxicity via all route of exposure. Cold Pressed Neem Oil has been used for hundreds of years to control plant insects and diseases.
Mineral Oil, MP Biomedicals is a transparent, colorless and odorless oil, a liquid by-product of the distill. A mineral oil is any of various colorless, odorless, light mixtures of alkanes in the C15 to C40 range from a non-vegetable (mineral) source.
Petroleum oils are referred to by many names including horticultural oil, spray oil, dormant oil, summer oil, supreme oil, superior oil, Volck oil or white mineral oil.
Directions: Spritz 4-5 times onto clean skin before moisturizing. Immediately apply Face + Hair Oil or moisturizer to slightly damp skin for maximum absorption. Spritz again lightly over makeup to set.
A safer thing to do would be to just get plain mineral oil and spray that on the plants for pest control. Since mineral oil is the active ingredient in Volck oil, it should work just fine. You don`t need those toxic chemicals.

The best time to apply neem oil is when trees are dormant to kill overwintering eggs and larvae. During the growing season, use neem oil as a repellant or to control infestations. Apply as a foliar spray or soil drench.

I recommend bar and chain oil (SAE 30 with additives to make it adhere) available at hardware stores and home centers. From your OM, page 9 (edited). FILLING OIL TANK 1. Remove oil cap. 2. Fill oil tank with SAE 30 motor oil if the temperature is between 30 & 75°F
• Colder use SAE 10 oil.
• Warmer use SAE 40 oil.
3. Replace oil cap at once. Tighten oil cap firmly for a good seal. This will avoid oil seepage from tank. 4. Wipe off excess oil.
• It is normal for oil to seep when saw is not in use.
• Empty oil tank after each use to prevent seepage.

Page 8 has a pretty good chain illustration, I think mine is clearer for direction.

Lawn Tractor Engine-Start Problems
ANSWER : I don’t think it’s the starter motor. This bigger engine has a compression release which allows it to crank with the compression released below a certtian rotational speed. This gizmo can hang up and not release if the engine sits for a long time etc.. What is supposed to happen is that the release stays effective until the starter can spin it up to speed before compression kicks in.

Have already disassembled down to impellar. how does the impellar come off
ANSWER : Check to see if you have a center screw in the impeller. If you do then it will be a left handed screw. You will turn it clockwise to get it out. Then I will usually take a screwdriver and insert it on the left side of the impeller. Then give the screwdriver a good sharp hit downward to break the impeller free, then just unscrew it. The brass center on the impeller will stick to the stainless steel on the motor shaft and you just have to break it free.
If this dosn’t work then remove the back of the motor and get a wrench on the back of the shaft, then find a way to grab the impeller and unscrew. Good luck
