An improperly routed belt can cause the engine to die when the blades are engaged. To check belt routing, lower the deck to its lowest setting and remove the belt guard by the drive pulley. Next, lift the belt over the pulley and remove the pins that support the deck at the rear.
This could be caused by not enough air getting into the system, not enough fuel getting into the system, or the fuel/air mix not burning well enough once it gets into the cylinder. It`s probably a clogged air filter. Could also be a clogged fuel filter or a bad spark plug.
Belt-the number one cause for your blades not to engage is that your belt is either stretched or loose causing it to slip or fall off completely. Belt could have snapped also. When you are trying to process too much grass/leaves they could pack up under your deck and push off your belt.
A Husqvarna riding mower commonly dies when blades are engaged because the grass box is not fully closed. Other possible causes include: Grass Box Misaligned. Grass Box Sensor Wiring Loose.
(1) The blades should always be turned on at full throttle if the mower has a electric P.T.O. switch.
Check that all the safety switches are working correctly, it is possible the seat switch is bad or loose plug/ bad wire. Also if battery weak or charging system weak/faulty the clutch will stall out engine, charge battery up with charger and try.
Frequent causes why the clutch doesn`t disengage correctly include faults in the release system (clutch release bearing, slave cylinder, clutch lever), a jammed pilot bearing, or non-compliance with important installation requirements.
If the PTO clutch is not getting power, if the clutch solenoid is defective, or if the clutch is worn out, the lawn mower blades will not engage. The PTO clutch is not repairable—if the clutch is defective, you must replace it.
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
Worn or broken blade drive belt – If the riding mower blades are not spinning, the blade drive belt may be worn or broken and unable to engage the blades. If the belt is intact, inspect it to see if it`s loose or slipping on the pulleys then replace it with a new one if necessary.
A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

Replaceing mower deck belt on 20 hp 42 mower model no 917275660. Got the belt on. How do I get the cluch spring back on.
ANSWER : Are you refering to the spring attached to the end of the cable that runs up to the lever on the dash to engage the blades? All you needed to disconnect was that cable on top of the idler arm that’s held in place by a ‘hairpin’ and the left pulley cover to put the belt on.
The mower deck clutch cable broke so blades will not engage and lever is loose on my Sears Craftsman 42-inch lawn tractor (917-271-742). I fished out the top piece of the cable, about 12 inches down to a rusty point where it broke. If I get the clutch kit (175067), which includes the cable, spring, etc., can I replace it from the top, or do I need a lift to get to the mover deck from the bottom? I do not have a lift or ramp that would work. What would I need to remove to get to the location where the cable/spring assembly hooks up to engage the blades?
ANSWER : I just got the kit 175067. Have the old one off except for where it’s attached to the lever, schedule and weather has kept me from going further. Very simple to reconnect things at the pulley and above but not too sure how to connect the rest onto the lever and haven’t had a chance to get a good look at how the old one might be connected yet. Should be a simple fix.

My Motion Drive Belt slipped of it’s pulley on a Husqvarna Riding Mower Model 917-289570. Do I have to remove the rear tire to put the belt back on?
ANSWER : I had a 2148. you remove the mower deck as the first step. feed the belt over the pulley on top the transmission, then put it over the engine pulley. then have someone push the clutch pedal in so the tensioner pulley moves, put the belt in the guide pulley and on the tensioner. release the clutch put the deck back on and you are good to go. notice there are little keepers welded to the frame for the front, engine, pulley and it is easy to mistakenly put the belt over them instead of under them. a general rule is that a pulley shaped like a Vee takes the V of the belt whilst a pulley which is flat takes the flat back of the belt. if you bear that in mind you will not have a problem putting belts back on. also there is a little decal on top the deck showing how the deck belt and deck drive belt go.

MY CRAFTSMAN GT5000 WILL NOT ENGAGE BLADES USE TO MAKE A CLICK NOISE NOW NOTHING i HAVE POWER TO SWITCH & NOTHING GOING TO MOWER CLUTCH?
ANSWER : Sounds like the switch is bad. You can test the clutch by unplugging the electrical connector then grounding the black wire to tractor or directly to the negative battery cable then the gray one to the positive touch it then the clutch should click on. The switch can be found on Sears parts direct but you will need the model number under the seat. Starts with 917 then 6 more digits.Hope this helps, if so please vote yes. Thanks!!
