Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The casing that broke away must be of the cheap “pot metal” variety. That is unfortunate. See if you can soak the area where the head is screwed onto the end of the shaft with penetrating oil like PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench by turning it upside down. If you can, let it soak overnight. A strap wrench would be handy to hold the casing possibly or maybe put a rag around it and hold it with a large tool (pipe wrench) or large vise. If vise grips fit on it, you could try them with a rag on the casing for protection. Post back as we would like to help.

Can not get spool head apart to change line, tried pump pliers, pipe wrench, won’t unscrew!!
ANSWER : If you are sure that it screws on it may be a reverse threaded unit..
I have a Toro Electric weed eater and cannot get spool off to change.
ANSWER : Did you try using a flat screwdriver between the head and the bump knob?
I need to replace the whole trimmer head and I dont know how to get the gear case off so I can put the new one on. Can anyone help?
ANSWER : To replace the trimmer head you don’t need to replace the gear case. If you look closely about a 1/4 inch up from the safety guard you’ll see a hole in the side of the “gearcase” assemby. (you may have to clean the old dead grass clippings off to see it) You can shove a rod into the hole that will stop the head from spinning freely and I believe you spin the head clock wise (reverse threads) to remove the head.
How do i install the blades on my weed eater so i dont have to use string anymore
ANSWER : There are many options out there but pretty much all of them require you to completly remove the line trimming head and screw on an aftermarket device. I use the bruch hog, the line trimmer and one with three nylon blades that are replacable (from Menards) and all work well but you do have to replace the blade too so it will not be the end all. If you are going through a lot of line may I suggest you run the trimmer at about 1/4 speed or just enough to do the job, it really saves a lot of line and frustration.

ANSWER : How do you remove the cutter head from a troybuilt TB539E string trimmer
My weed eater hedge trimmer runs for about 10 minutes and cuts off. It seems as though it is flooded, because it won’t start again until some time later. But it continues with the same pattern. I purchased a can of premixed gas/oil to make sure it was my mixture, to no avail. I have not replaced the spark plug yet, but I don’t think that has anything to do with it. Do you have any suggestions?
ANSWER : The plug can be the problem but also the air mix as well get the best plug you can

ANSWER : 1. Remove the cap on the trimmer head, it unscrews.2.
The spool comes off, and on the inside of the spool there is a small
hole, this is where you will start your trimmer line. It it will hold it
in place while you wrap it. There is also arrows on the spool showing
the direction that you need to wrap your spool.3. Insert the
line in the hole and start to wrap the line in the directions of the
arrows, try to keep the line in rows, or else the line may bind and you
will have to do it all over again.4. Feed the line through the
retainer and reinstall the spool by lining up the retainer and the slot
on the outside portion on the trimmer head, the screw back on the
trimmer head and you will be ready to trim.
