How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The two most common reasons a chainsaw won`t idle are a blocked air filter and an idle screw out of adjustment. Other possible causes include: Dirty Air Filter. Idle Screw out of Adjustment.
McCulloch recommends “Universal powered by McCulloch two-stroke oil”. The petrol/oil ratio must be 50:1.
If your chainsaw still starts and then stops working, check the air filter. Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty or damaged. Another reason that your chainsaw starts and then stops working could be that the spark arrestor is dirty or clogged. If this is the case, clean it with a wire brush.
Carburetor Idle Adjustment

The most probable – and easiest to fix – cause of chain rotation while the chainsaw engine idles is a poorly adjusted idle setting on the carburetor. The result is that too much fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber when the throttle is released, and the engine doesn`t really slow.

If the carburetor is clogged, it may only work with the choke engaged, which is not a good way to be running your engine. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing some of the internal parts with a new carb kit is a great way to get your carburetor running properly again.

I was using the saw as a chain saw last weekend to cut up an old tree stump when the chain came off. I don’t know how to access it to put it back on and don’t have a user manual. The saw belonged to my late father and I don’t know if he even kept the manual.
ANSWER : You will have to remove the cover on the side the chain bar goes into. There should be one or two nuts holding the cover on the side. The is also a chain tension adjuster you may have to loosen to put it back on. Make note of the direction of the teeth on the chain. It is an directional chain. The tension adjuster is usually a flat head screw on the front side right beside the chain bar.Unless it is a really old saw, manuals are available from most manufacturers for free download. See if you can locate a brand name and model number.

I have a 107624-02 saw. Motor of saw runs but chain does not move. Trouble shooting diagnosis: Gear train failure. I removed the assembly of the chain bar gear. The “spring steel” strap that is supposed to hold the large gear in apparently lets the gear slip to the outside so the gears do not mesh, and the chain does not move. The gears look OK, so it doesn’t appear they are worn and need replacing.
However, if they need replacing, how does one get the small one out, which may be attached to the motor drive shaft. There are no details in the owner’s manual. In troubleshooting, it simply states “see authorized service center”. I prefer to repair it myself, for which I need details of the gears assembly.

How to tighten chain on 4620avx poulan pro – Poulan Pro Chain Saw 46cc 20"
ANSWER : First, RTFM- read the manual. Lost it? No problem, download it from Poulan PRO website page for PP4620avx. Pick a version you like, save and read it. Google is your friend.
Chain Adjustment Part cut and pasted as follows:
Adjusting the tension:
Chain tension is very important. Chain stretches during use. This is especially true during the first few times you use your saw. Always check chain tension each time you use and refuel your saw.
1. Lift lever on bar knob and turn counter-clockwise 1.5-2 turns to loosen clutch cover.
2. Turn adjusting wheel (downward direction) to tension chain until chain solidly contacts bottom of guide bar rail. Lift tip of guide bar while adjusting tension. Tighten chain Adjusting Wheel
3. Use a screwdriver to move chain around guide bar to ensure all links are in bar groove.
4. While lifting tip of guide bar, tighten bar knob securely (clockwise).
Hand tighten only.

Be careful not to destroy the adjustment mechanism. When it breaks, go for a clutch cover with the simple adjuster that needs a “scrench”. Longer term, learn how to search this info. Saves time. Now you can work on sharpening chains- very important.
