Carburetor

If the lawn mower engine stops after a few
seconds, the carburetor might be clogged or have bad fuel in the float
bowl. If old fuel was left in the lawn mower for a long time some of the
volatile ingredients may have evaporated, leaving a thicker, stickier
product that is more like varnish or shellac. This sticky fuel can clog
up the small jets and ports in the carburetor and it can be difficult to
burn allowing the engine to only run for a few seconds. The only
solution is to drain the old fuel from the float bowl and thoroughly
clean the carburetor with carburetor cleaner. If that isn’t effective,
replace the entire carburetor.

Carburetor Kit

If the engine stops after a few seconds it
may not be getting enough fuel. The engine needs air, fuel and spark to
maintain operation. The carburetor has two inputs, fuel from the gas
tank and air through the air filter. The carburetor is designed to mix
the air and fuel in a consistent ratio so that the engine can run
continuously. If the carburetor is not getting enough air or fuel, or if
the fuel is blocked inside the carburetor the engine stops after a few
seconds. Rebuild the carburetor with this carburetor kit.

Gas Cap

If the lawn mower engine stops after a few
seconds and then stops running, the gas cap might be defective. All gas
caps have a small vent to allow air back into the tank when the engine
is running – otherwise as gas is drawn from the tank it would create a
vacuum. The vent can be difficult to see and there are many different
types of vent. If loosening the gas cap a little allows the engine to
stay running, replace the gas cap. It’s sometimes possible to clean the
vent, but on most newer engines the vent cannot be cleaned, it should be
replaced.

Spark Plug

seconds the spark plug might be defective. All small engines have an
ignition coil. The coil is the device that provides spark for the spark
plug(s). If the coil is bad there won’t be spark to the plug(s). The
coil is essentially a small, induction generator. It is mounted next to
the flywheel. The flywheel has one or more strong, embedded magnets. As
the flywheel spins, the magnet(s) zip past the induction coil, this
action of a magnet passing past a coil induces a voltage. Depending on
the design of the coil and the strength of the magnets, a stronger or
weaker spark can be created and delivered to the spark plug(s). Each
time the flywheel spins around a spark is generated. The best way to
test a spark plug is to use a spark plug tester. The spark plug should
have a strong, visible spark between the electrodes when the engine is
cranking. If it doesn’t, replace it.

I’ve been trying to start my briggs & straton Masport lawn mower, after it was sitting idel for over a year.
Replaced oil ok / added new fuel / spark working, however it dies after fisrt kick over.

ANSWER : I had the same problem. It turned out to be a blocked carby and the way to fix is as follows;- remove air filter- start mower (assuming it now starts)- place open hand over carby hole and then remove. The force of the spinning blades will **** through the blockage.You may need to prime it first.Hope that helps.

Troy Bilt Lawn Mower pull Cord broken
ANSWER : There should be four bolts holding the cover on that houses the pull cord assembly take the bolts out look inside you should see the rest of the broken cord at the other end there is a spool that the cord rolls up in to pull the cord until it stops the other end of the cord is a not in the cord pull on the knot the broken peice should come out turn the spool 2 times in the direction that is against the pressre while holding the spool in place feed the new cord in through the whole that you pulled the broken cord out of then tie the cord in a knot wind the rest of the cord up then feed the other end of the cord through the new pull handle tie the cord in a knot put the housing back on

ANSWER : Hi, You have most likely sheared the flywheel key which puts the timing out. Remove the flywheel and replace the key. Regards Phil.

Broken pull cord
ANSWER : You have to take four allen screw out of the plastic that holds the engine on. There is also one by the spark plug that needs to come out. Once the engine is loose, you have to unplug one wire and unscrew the other. Then the engine should come off. Then loosen the two allen screws holding the pulley in and it will come out.

Have a craftsman 16″ chain saw 358.360260. Could not initially get it started after it had sat for a couple years with fuel stabilizer in it. When I went to use it the fuel had all evaporated and the fuel pick line was rotted. I replaced that with some difficulty but finally got it on. Saw still wouldn’t start. Replaced the fuel filter. Still wouldn’t start. Pulled the carb apart and cleaned and recleaned everything. Diaphragms were good and I didn’t adjust any of the mixture screws because as I said it ran fine before storage. Non of the carb passages were clogged. Fresh gas 40:1, good spark plug and good spark. Airfilter is good. Engine has maybe about 4 hours of total run time on it. It’s a ZAMA (?) carb. It will run for about 30 seconds when I manually prime it by pouring a small amount of fuel directly though the carb. When I was disassembling the carb the vent hose that goes back into the fuel tank seemed to have a small out of ?substance? in it which I cleaned out. It was right at the end the of the hose that goes back into the fuel tank and not up by the carb. It didn’t appear to be like your typical gummy deposits/varnish though. I hope it wasn?t some type of spongy check valve stuff that is supposed to be in there. That might explain some of my problems. Anyway, I also can not seem to get the primer bulb to fill. When I open the fuel tank, look in side and depress the primer bulb, air bubbles come out of the fuel filter. But when I let the bulb reexpand there’s no fuel that gets sucked up the hose. I can however seem to fill the primer bulb when the fuel tank is full and the chainsaw is laying on it?s pull cord side and the bulb is depressed a bunch of times. The saw will also start and run again for about 15 seconds then die. It’s definitely not getting/fuel and probably running out . Thanks.

I have a husqvarna 323L string trimmer. I stored it after running the tank & carb dry for about two years. I fueled it, then started it, & it ran for a minute then died like I turned the switch off. Since it would not restart, I found the fuel filter had broken off the hardened fuel line & it sucked gummy crap out of the tank & into the carb. Failing at cleaning the carb, I finally put a new carb on it & replaced the pump, hoses & filter. It has ran good till this year. I winterized it with stabilizer & left it with a full tank over the winter. The gas in the tank was gone when I got ready to use it this year. I filled the tank with premix, checked for leaks, then started it. It would run fine for about half a tank, start idling poorly (lean) then cutoff & refuse to restart till I refilled the tank. I finally found the tank had cracks & was letting pressure out of the tank & apparently this was causing the carb to lose it’s ability to siphon gas out of the tank. So I replaced the tank which came with new hoses & a filter, which I properly installed to the carb. It cranked right up, but when it runs a half tank, the carb quits sucking gas out of the tank. When I pump to prime the carb, it moves the fuel into the carb, but the pump never gets hard like it does when I prime the carb when the motor is cold. I have to keep refilling the tank, prime, & then it starts & runs until the tank gets about half empty. The new fuel filter is down in the gas tank properly, but It will not run after it shuts off until I refill the tank & prime. I’m baffled. New tank, new hoses, new filter, new carb, & I can find no leaks in the fuel system. It runs strong. The 323L is a two-stroke & it always cranks on the second pull from cold on a full tank. Any ideas?

ANSWER : Yeah I got the same problem. My pull cord broke in the first season. On my own once the plastic cover is removed, 4 phillips screws, the cord housing is secured by 3 10mm nuts. Remove them and lift out the housing. On my own unit the spring had also slipped out of the mount on the shaft securing the assembly (another 10mm socket nut will loosen that) and I had to resecure that first, then wind it up before making the knot.. I used a Briggs and Stratton cord from another (truly dead) mower and have had no problems since then.

How do I replace broken pull start cord? – RTO Toro Lawn Boy 21in Insight Series Steel Deck Mower
ANSWER : There are screws holding the top of the mower on, you should be able to remove those and lift them to get access to the cord. From there it is easy. just put new cord back the opposite of the way you removed it, making sure that you get it wrapped the correct direction. you can get a cord anywhere they sell mowers.
