How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
Worn bearings about to fail completely often make grinding noises, as well as unusual vibrations. The mandrels holding the mower deck`s cutting blades contain two bearings that need frequent lubrication to keep the bearings working properly. As bearings dry and overheat, seals fail and dirt enters the mechanism.
If you hear strange noises coming from your mower deck, it may be a sign that the spindle is damaged. A bad spindle can produce grinding, rattling, or squeaking sounds, which indicate that the bearings are worn out or the spindle is bent.
Engine Fan – Most small engines don`t have coolant they are air-cooled and so they need a fan to pull cool air across the engine, and fans are noisy. Check out “Valve lash adjustment”, it`s for a walk-behind mower, but the process is the same for any OHV engine. Engine oil is another opportunity to help reduce noise.
Grinding noises are associated with rotating parts and rotating systems; any part or system that rotates can cause grinding.
However, listen for sounds that resemble whining, growling, screaming, chattering, skidding, or clunking; changes in pitch; or noises that sound like electrical sparking. Any of these are signs of some level of spindle wear or damage. Noisy spindle vibration can be caused by any of the following: Bearing defects.
You can expect to get anywhere from six to ten years out of your riding mower, or longer with proper care and maintenance. Like most machines, riding lawn mower life varies depending on a number of factors including terrain, maintenance and upkeep, number of hours used, and more.
The spindles and caster wheels are generally the most often greased. The spindles and castor wheels should be done around once a month because of the moving interior parts. Commercial mowers that put hundreds of hours on their Ferris mower would be looking at greasing the mower everyday depending on usage.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
A screeching engine is usually a simple fix. The lawn mower`s engine belt may need to be replaced. If it is sputtering or knocking, it may be time to replace the rings.
The most common cause of excessive vibration is an unbalanced blade. If you`ve recently had your blade sharpened, it`s possible the blade hasn`t been properly balanced during the sharpening process. To fix this, the blade should be removed, rebalanced and refitted.
Mower deck gauge wheels should be properly adjusted to prevent scalping grass on uneven terrain. The bottom of the wheels should sit approximately 1/8-1/2 of an inch from the ground, depending on your cutting height.
If you`re hearing grinding noises when turning, you should also check the condition of your wheel bearings. Wheel bearings are situated between the axle and the wheel, and minimize friction, allowing for smooth movement while driving.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the height of the deck rear to the height of the deck front. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the type of mower.
Mower blades are spinning 4000 RPMs. An unbalanced blade spinning that fast will cause a significant amount of vibration, which will put stress on yout blade shaft, spindle, and even the engine.

What size and how many blades do I need for my husqvarna 21 hp riding mower with a 46 inch deck?
ANSWER : Well I guess laying down next to it and taking a look under the mower deck is beyond the question. One could ask about how many teeth the horse has or just look in its mouth. However, I am going to guess 3 blades as 2 blade units usually are 42″ cut maximum. Mine is 48″ and has 3 blades.

My husqvarna zero turn mower has an auto safety shut off. I have isolated 3 (Brake, Left control level, and Right contol lever)trying to see which one was faulty, but I’m not sure where to go next. When I took the brake off, the mower stalled so I held the safety button down and when the brake was off the engine stayed running. But when I pulled the Left or Right Control level to move, it shut off, so I held those down to see if I could see which one was faulty. The engine stayed running, so I couldn’t figure out which one was bad. Every thing stayed running until I engaged the mower deck, and then it shut down again. I gave up at that point and figured I needed an experts help! Thanks, Jon Sable

Excessive vibration when blades are engaged. No visible problems. Started after a rag wrapped around one blade.
ANSWER : If it started when a rag wrapped around the spindle mandrel? You may have damaged the mandrel. Check where they bolts onto the deck, if the mounts are damaged, this could give you the vibration. You could also have done something as simple as bent a blade.
