How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Water stress during the late spring and early summer is a common cause of the little fruits drying up and falling off the tree. Once the fruits get a bit larger, trees can tolerate substantial water stress without fruit loss, however there may be a significant reduction in fruit size.
Fruit drop is caused by stress – water (too much or too little), temperature (hot/cold extremes), nutrition problems and/or pest/disease problems.
It is typically caused by the fungal pathogen, Alternaria alternata. Alternaria fungus develops on dead tissue of the fruit and leaves during wet conditions, producing spores that are carried by the wind. The fungal spores require moisture to germinate and infect the fruit.
To avoid fruit drop as a result of overbearing, we recommend thinning the young fruit before the tree drops it. In general, it is best to leave 4-6 inches between each fruit and break up any clusters that may form. You may use small, sharp pruners to remove the fruit or simply pluck it off with your fingers.
A lemon drop is a vodka-based cocktail that has a lemony, sweet and sour flavor, prepared using lemon juice, triple sec and simple syrup. It has been described as a variant of, or as “a take on”, the Vodka Martini, but is in actual fact a closer to a White Lady variant.
Citrus need regular water especially in the warm months but over watering can leach nutrients from the soil and cause root rot. If the roots are damaged they can`t take up the nutrients the plant needs. Often the leaves on an over watered tree will turn yellow and drop.
They will eventually fall from lime trees as they turn yellow. Lime tree harvest generally takes place during summer. Limes take about three to four months until they reach peak flavor. However, in some regions (USDA plant hardiness zones 9-10), green limes can be harvested year-round.
Generally, you may see lemons falling from trees if the tree sets more fruit than it can support. A lemon tree normally goes through three periods of fruit drop. The first drop occurs when 70 to 80 percent of the flowers fall from the tree without ever setting fruit.
Citrus trees can suffer with phytophthora, root rot and other soil borne diseases. Citrus needs to be a full sun position with good drainage. Perhaps you could check on the drainage and make sure the water is draining freely and the soil is not saturated.
Citrus naturally adjusts the amount of fruit carried on the tree, so some fruit drop is normal. Excessive drop of older fruit may have several causes: lack of water or fertilizer, heavy pruning, sudden changes in temperature (especially sudden hot temperatures at fruit set or shortly after), or insect infestation.
The earth`s gravitational force is always exerted on the tree and the fruits and when the fruit is detached from the tree it falls down due to gravity.
In some cases, fruit drop is nature`s way of reducing a heavy fruit load. In other cases, premature fruit drop may be caused by pests and diseases, adverse weather conditions or poor cultural practices.
Fruit Left on the Tree Too Long

Lemons may develop thick, puffy skin when left on the tree for too long after they ripen. You can wait to pick until the lemons have turned fully yellow, but to ensure juiciness and thinner skins, pick them while there is a little green still on the fruit.

I just bought a Scotts 2000 discontinued model because it was the last drop spreader that lowes had,the problem is it works better in reverse then it does forward,???? is the hopper on backwards ?
ANSWER : Very likely, the gears that turn the horizontal distribution bar were installed backwards, causing this odd problem you’re discribing.
If you bought it already assembled, I recommend returning it. It’s your call whether you have them fix the problem, give you a new functional spreader, or give you your money back.
If you assembled it yourself, then you probably already realize by now what component was assembled incorrectly.
Good luck!

How do you use roundup to kill a tree stump? – Roundup "" Weed & Grass Killer
ANSWER : Hello, I am a grower and licensed pesticides applicator (40 yrs exp).
Roundup lost the trade mark years ago,”glyphosphate” which is now marketed (cheaper) under many other names,
Will kill a live tree if sprayed on the leaves! Also will damage young trees if you just get over spray on the trunk while spraying weeds.
Also, kills grass as well as broadleaved plants.
To kill a tree you would need to spray the leaves, then wait at least a month before cutting the tree down. I have successfully killed a few stumps by spraying the live suckers.
Be especially careful of spray drift as the finer the droplets are the more effective the chemical is. Read the label!
