Inspect the V-belt for damage and replace it with a new one if necessary. Damaged control cable – A broken, or misadjusted, control cable will prevent the mower from self-propelling as well. If the cable is intact but doesn`t move freely, you can try applying a small amount of lubrication to the cable.
Grinding gears, starting and stopping during operation, and the wheels not rotating with the pulley are common signs that your mower`s transmission is breaking down.
Self-propelled mowers are available in single and variable speed models. They work by engaging a speed control lever (sometimes part of the handle; sometimes a separate bar or shifter) that causes the mower to move forward.
So can you push a self-propelled lawnmower? You can push a self-propelled lawnmower, it won`t damage the transmission in any way. However, it may be difficult to do so, self propelled mowers are a little heavier than a regular push mower.
Check the drive control cable when your lawn mower won`t move because the drive cable can stretch over time. Replace the control cable if it`s damaged. A worn or broken drive belt will also prevent the mower from moving so check the belt next. Adjust the drive belt or replace it if it`s broken.
Pour penetrating oil into the cable (Photo 1). Grab the inner cable with pliers and work it up and down to loosen it. When the cable moves freely and all the penetrating oil has drained out, squirt silicone lubricant into the funnel to keep the cable sliding freely. Reinstall the cable (Photo 2).
How Long Do Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers Last? A self-propelled mower should last eight years or more, depending on how often it`s used. (Most manufacturers rate their mowers for a set number of service hours.) There`s no significant difference in the service life of a self-propelled mower versus a standard push model.
Self-propelled lawn mowers use a drive system that moves the mower forward on its own, without you having to push it. You engage the propulsion by squeezing a bar on the mower. Then, you simply walk behind and steer the mower, while it does all the hard work for you.
Front-wheel drive self-propelled mowers are generally the least expensive option. These machines perform well on flat surfaces and turn easier than their rear-wheel drive counterparts. Rear-wheel drive self-propelled mowers are a bit harder to turn around obstacles, but they excel at climbing hills.

Self propelled feature stopped functining. I previously replaced the wheels after the gears had worn down. Now I can’t get any response to engaging the self-propelled cable.
ANSWER : Have you checked the drive belt? There should be a belt running from the main shaft (above blade) out to the wheel drive. You didn’t list model number but I’m assuming it’s front wheel drive. There should be a cover over this belt so it might be hard to see from underneath. Also there should be a cover on top going to the drive transmission. If the belt is OK, check to be sure lever is moving the transmission lever.

Belt for self popelled mower keeps breaking? Cannot keep a new belt on pulley
ANSWER : Check that the pulley isn’t seizing up and causing the belt to snap, also be sure you loosen up the self propelled mechanismn by spraying down with WD 40, too much belt tension can cause this, but it rather seems like the belt pulley seizes and the engines drive pulley keeps turning causing the belt to overheat and break or stretch and come flying off.

Self-propell won’t work
ANSWER : Broken or worn out worm/sector gear most likely.

can you spin the drive pulley on the transmission and see if the wheels turn? If they dont spin you have internal damage or wear. If they do spin you either have a worn out drive engagement cable or it has come off the transmission.

good luck and be careful!
