How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

For the first mow of the season, it is better to lower your deck height to about 1.5”. This will help clean up the dead grass as well as allow more light to shine through and really get your lawn to come out of dormancy. After the first cutting of the season, you can raise your deck height to 2-2.5”.
Mower deck gauge wheels should be properly adjusted to prevent scalping grass on uneven terrain. The bottom of the wheels should sit approximately 1/8-1/2 of an inch from the ground, depending on your cutting height.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the height of the deck rear to the height of the deck front.
Aside from a deck adjustment gear, your mower may have a linkage that helps adjust the deck height. The linkage has a nut that you can tighten to raise the deck and loosen to lower the deck. If the metal linkage becomes damaged or seized, and you can`t make these adjustments, a new linkage is required.
Always Mow at 3 Inches or Taller

Mowing the grass at 3 inches or taller will prevent diseases, promote deep digging roots, help the grass conserve water, improve turf density, and improve turf color.

The simple act of raising one`s lawnmower can reduce water consumption as well as pesticide and fertilizer use. Because raising the height of one`s lawnmower creates healthier lawns, grass will require less watering and fertilization and it will fight off weeds naturally, reducing the need for pesticides.
For this reason, some people prefer to mow at 3 or 3.5 inches. For the healthiest and most sustainable approach, Michigan State University Extension says 3.5 to 4 inches is most desirable. Lawns mowed at 3.5 or 4 inches out-compete weeds, tolerate grubs and look just as good as lawns mowed at 2.5 inches.
For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck.
Just as stronger is better, deeper is duly so. “With the deepest deck and highest lift blade, the mower should do a tremendous job vacuuming and bagging,” Tegtmeier noted.
High wheels are best for bumpy or difficult terrain. With large wheels in the back, you can go over any terrain with ease. A high-wheeled model might cost a little more, but it`s worth it if needed. Typically, the cost difference is very minimal anyway.
Lawn scalping could be caused by going on vacation and missing mowing days, a week of rain that makes mowing impossible while the grass shoots up quickly, or possibly just uneven spots in your lawn. Scalping is mowing the grass so low that you cut the blade off at the growing point or crown.
The deck of your mower should be level as seen on a flat, level surface. Setting each of the wheels to the same adjustment point should do the job. If the deck is not level, the mower will produce an uneven, unkempt looking surface of your grass.
Should the front of the mower run lower than the rear? Yes. The grass is cut on the front side of the mower and not at the rear. This leaves a better and more consistent cut and aides in better material distribution.
For the last cut of fall, lower your mower blade one notch or set your mower deck to the lowest mowing height recommended for your turf. If possible, use a mulching mower and leave grass clippings on the lawn, as they can provide additional nutrients for the roots to store for use over the winter and early spring.
If you`ve checked and sharpened your mower blades, but your riding mower is cutting uneven, then it may be that the mower deck requires leveling. This process helps ensure the mower blade is at the correct distance from the ground on both sides of the mower and the blade is positioned correctly from front to back.
What appears to be a mower deck that`s out of whack may really be due to poor tire inflation. Front tires that are too low or rear tires that are overinflated can cause the appearance of a poorly adjusted mower deck. Always check and fill tires with the mower turned off and parked on a flat, level surface.

What Are The Causes of Uneven Cuts from Your Lawn Mower. The causes of uneven cuts from your lawn mower are worn or dull blades, incorrect tire pressure, bent blades, or a clogged deck with grass. What causes JD 260 riding mower to start dying when you engage the mower deck? It runs fine when you disengage the mower deck.
ANSWER : It’s the safety system that causes this. There is a switch under the seat that should activate when you are sitting in the seat. The switch can come loose or fail, the mounting can break, or the wires can come loose – any of these would cause the “engine dies when I engage the mower deck” behavior. Lift the seat, examine the switch. Rmove the switch and keep the plunger in with a piece of tape. Fixed? Then it’s just the mounting or adjustment. Not fixed? It’s the switch itself or the wires or connectors to it.
