How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Grass height, weather conditions, and a worn blade will be the most obvious reasons for the tractor or walk-behind mower clogging. Very often, a dull, damaged, or worn blade is the root cause of a clogging chute.
GRASS TOO WET – Clumping can occur if you are mowing grass that is excessively wet. Try to mow only when your lawn is dry. Note: Moisture makes up a significant percentage of grass composition. Recent rains, foggy or damp conditions may result in grass that may appear to be dry but actually is very moist.
1 – It`s too wet

Heavy mowers will start to sink into the grass and whip up moisture as they cut your grass, which causes grass to clump in matted wet wads that clog the deck of your mower and its catcher.

Because when grass gets too long, your mower is forced to chop off way more than a ⅓ of each grass plant. This in turn will result in a clumping nightmare. That`s why we recommend you set the mower deck to around 3 and ½ inches and mow more often. Never remove more than one-third of the blades length at a time.
Your lawn mower spits out cut grass pieces that begin flying around during mowing because you are cutting grass that is too long or wet, using dull mower blades, or there is a blocked grass chute. Other reasons include a dirty mower deck or the grass bag being loose.
The WD-40 will keep most of the grass from building up and sticking, but you will still want to remove any detritus after your mowing session. This can be done with the wire brush mentioned above or a stainless steel mower blade, which can be found at your local hardware shops.
Excessive clippings left on the lawn surface are unattractive and can damage the grass beneath. Grass clippings will always be a part of lawn care. You can bag clippings or recycle them by returning them to the lawn.
Why doesn`t my lawn tractor discharge grass properly? The underlying cause for improper grass discharge is lack of airflow through the deck. WET GRASS: Wet grass is heavy and the available air flow from a properly functioning mower is not sufficient to throw the wet clippings out of the deck.
If the choke is left on for too long, excess fuel flows into the combustion chamber, causing it to seize up and stall. If this happens, the lawn mower will need to sit idle for several hours to allow the fuel to drain out of the chamber. Turn off the choke and try again later.
Most of the time, dead or frazzled grass indicates you need to sharpen your lawn mower blade, especially if the problem is only on the tips of the leaves. A dull blade will shred the ends of the leaves and cause them to die back a little.
You may not realize it, but using a grass catcher on your lawn mower is an extra step that adds time to your mowing and is completely unnecessary. Furthermore, you might actually be harming your grass unintentionally!
Turn your grass bag upside down on a flat surface. Using a leaf blower or an air compressor with a nozzle blow air around the outside of the grass bag. This will help to further loosen any particles of lawn waste stuck in the fabric. If you use an air compressor, make sure you use one with a low psi to prevent tearing.

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.

Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.

I have a problem with a Black and Decker electric lawn mower model MM525. While cutting some high grass today, the mower slowed down, then quit and would not restart. I checked the electrical outlet and there was no power–the fuse was burned out in the switch box. I replaced it, tried again, and again it would not start or even give any response at all, but again it blew out the fuse in the box. The fuse is 25A and the mower is only 12A so that’s not an issue, besides, I’ve used this mower from that outlet for about 4 years since I first got the mower and never had any problem before. My question is: is whatever is causing the mower not to start and to blow out my fuse something that can be repaired or should be? Thanks.
ANSWER : Hello blumph,
I can think of only one or two things that are causing your problems. It could either be approx. a $14.00 switch in the handle that has shorted out, or 2 bad brushes $1.75/ea.on the armature (motor). Both are fairly simple fixes with just a screwdriver and maybe pliers. You might also check and see if the power cord has been chafed or damaged and is shorting out. See below for parts:http://www.ereplacementparts.com/black-and-decker-mm575-electric-lawnhogtrade-[email protected]

Where is oil drain plug on MTD mower – Mtd LAWN MOWER PART # 683-04163B FRAME Assembly:RIDER
ANSWER : If it isn’t on the bottom of the engine (above the blade) then you don’t have one. This is not that uncommon. When you need to drain the oil, FIRST- pull the spark plug wire off!!! Then remove the dip stick or filler plug and turn the unit upside down and drain the oil.
