White/Grey/Blue Coloured smoke) can be caused by overfilled oil levels, spilt/leaked oil on the engine or a dirty oil filter. Check and confirm the lawnmower has the correct amount of SAE30 oil by checking oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick.
Your lawn mower`s carburetor regulates the ratio of gasoline to air mixture. If the carburetor isn`t getting enough air, the mixture has a higher percentage of gasoline, which can create black exhaust smoke. It`s possible that a dirty or clogged air filter is preventing sufficient airflow into the carburetor.
If it`s clogged, the combustion chamber may not be getting enough oxygen, resulting in a too-rich fuel mixture that will cause the engine to run poorly and even spew smoke. The solution is to change the air filter, a relatively easy task. Blue and white smoke is the result of oil on the engine.
Oil can come out of the exhaust of your lawn mower when it is tilted to the extreme, especially when the crankcase is overfilled with oil. A clogged air-filter can cause the oil to spill out of the exhaust vent, so simply replace it if this is the case.
To fix blue or gray smoke: The easy way is to add a bottle of Motor Honey Oil Treatment to your motor oil with each oil change. It`s specially designed to reduce oil burning and stop smoky exhausts. The hard way is an engine overhaul, which is about a hundred times more expensive and a thousand times more work.
Black or gray exhaust smoke

Clogged air filter. Improper timing. Overheating engine. Leaking oil.

The white smoke is the engine burning off all the excess oil. The fix – drain the excessive oil, and idle the engine until the smoke clears. This may take 5 minutes or so. Too much oil will cause other problems, smoke, poor running, no running, leaks, engine damage.
White Smoke

In extreme cases, you will need to replace your head gasket. At the first sign of white smoke you can try head gasket repair treatment to seal the leak before you do serious damage to your engine.

At times, black smoke can be an indicator that a manmade material is burning such as tires, vehicles or a structure. As a general rule, the darker the smoke, the more volatile the fire is. Grey smoke can indicate that the fire is slowing down and running out of materials to burn.

Now to rectify your problem; The air-filter will probably be saturated with oil. It will probably be the cartridge type which is not serviceable. Purchase a new filter (take your old filter so the sale person can compare like for like). Before you refit the new filter, take out the sparkplug, it will probably be saturated in oil – wash it in petrol, let it dry then refit it. The engine should start and belch out great quantities of smoke. Don’t be alarmed this will burn away. Once the smoke has cleared, check the oil level, fit the air filter and mow your lawn.

I have an LT2000 Craftsman Riding Mower that starts fine but once it has been mowing for 10-15 minutes, cuts out and dies. Immediately able to smell that the engine is hot and a little smoke comes from the top. I have changed the gas, fuel line filter, spark plugs, both air filters and even have taken the float from the carburator and blown it out. Once cooled, starts up again immediately. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Check the oil level might have low oil sensor on it. Also make sure the engine is clean (no built up oil and dirt on the motor itself or the fins on the motor)
