Generally this would mean that compression is bypassing the piston rings. This could either be because the rings are worn past tolerance and compression is low, or the oil has thinned due to dilution with fuel. The latter can happen if the fuel tap is not turned off after use, and the carburettor float needle has not been shutting off fully. This can be remedied by replacing the engine oil. However if the rings are worn, they will need to be replaced. As most modern mowers have a vacuum operated decompression mechanism, for easy starting, low compression can be difficult to diagnose. If the problem is remedied by changing the oil, you must in future remember to turn off the fuel tap after use. Check the float needle/seat to ensure their is not a hair or grit stopping the needle completely shutting off fuel flow into the fuel bowl when it is full and float is pushed up.

Too much oil in the crankcase (overfilled!) Engine speed is too high. Oil filler cap or oil fill gasket is damaged or missing. Breather mechanism is dirty, damaged or defective.
Excessive oil coming from the breather is an indication that you have high crankcase pressure. This can be due to a number of things, some sudden and some slower to develop. Probably these are the most likely: Cylinder head gasket leaking.

Infrequent Oil Changes
If you haven`t changed your car`s oil in a while, it is possible for gas to have made its way into the oil pan. Even if it is only a small amount at a time, it will eventually cause your oil to smell like gas if you change your oil infrequently.
This usually happens when the engine is under load or at high rpm, which is when pressure builds up quickly and needs to be relieved the most. The extreme solution to prevent all of this is to install a vacuum pump that continuously draws the pressure out of the crankcase.
To keep the crankcase vent filter in good working condition, it should be changed every time you replace your spark plugs. If this is not done, oil sludge will build up in your filter and cause serious problems and damage your engine.
Air breathers filter contaminants out of the atmosphere before they have a chance to get into your engine. If you`ve removed your vehicle`s factory airbox, you may need a breather filter (or two) before your vehicle will run correctly after installing an aftermarket intake kit.
Excess crankcase pressure may also occur if the PCV system vacuum supply becomes restricted. Excessive crankcase under-pressure, (vacuum) can occur if the fresh air inlet becomes restricted or the wrong PCV valve is used.
