How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If the mower vibrates when you engage the cutting blades, there might be a problem with the blade drive system. Deck vibration can be caused by an unbalanced blade, worn pulley or mandrel, bad blade belt or debris caught inside a pulley. Loose nuts or bolts on the pulleys, mandrels or blades can also cause vibration.
The pulleys in your lawn tractor are driven by the drive belt, and turn the spindles. If a pulley doesn`t spin freely, it can cause the engine to die when the blades are engaged. To check the pulleys for sticking and damage, first remove the drive belt from the engine pulley and lift the lever to engage the blades.
There is a safety switch at the end of the cutter engage lever which has gone faulty and needs replacing, overiding the switch by keeping it pressed in will allow the mower to be operational till replacement switch is fitted.
It could be your bearings and your spindle pockets, or spindles, have seized up,” says Oshel. If the blades are stuck, pump some grease into the fitting and carefully work the blades back and forth by hand until they move freely.
The most common cause of excessive vibration is an unbalanced blade. If you`ve recently had your blade sharpened, it`s possible the blade hasn`t been properly balanced during the sharpening process. To fix this, the blade should be removed, rebalanced and refitted.
This is usually a sign that the mower blade is damaged or out of balance. The vibration is a result of uneven weight distribution at either end of the blade while it spins (the same way a washing machine with a load that is distributed unevenly will knock around and make more noise than usual).
Mower blades are spinning 4000 RPMs. An unbalanced blade spinning that fast will cause a significant amount of vibration, which will put stress on yout blade shaft, spindle, and even the engine.
Electric lawnmowers may cut out for two main reasons: A faulty power switch or a loose cable connection. An overheating motor can cause the thermal cut out to trip.
If the mowing deck is engaged and the unit is in reverse, the mower will shut down as part of a safety feature.
If the PTO clutch is not getting power, if the clutch solenoid is defective, or if the clutch is worn out, the lawn mower blades will not engage. The PTO clutch is not repairable—if the clutch is defective, you must replace it.
On average, a mower blade should be sharpened after every 20 to 25 hours of use time.
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
When your mower vibrates severely, start by checking whether the blade is damaged, imbalanced or loose. Tighten the blade bolt if it`s loose. Replace the blade if it`s damaged. A rough-running engine can also cause severe vibrations so tune up the mower to cure engine vibrations.
Identify if Your Lawn Mower Blades Need To Be Balanced
So to ensure that your lawn mower blades need balancing, look for unbalanced lawn mower blade symptoms like your lawn mower is not giving your grass a quality and even cut, as well as vibrating and making odd noises while running.

When I hold the bar down that engages the blade it will not cut?
Is the blade sharp?
Mowing I accidently it teh concrete on teh side walk, which bent my blades. I bought new ones and replaced them. But when i mow, it seems like only one blade is cutting. I am afraid i did damage to something else. What could it be?
I did the same thing. I replace the belt that turns the blades. The pressure of the impact had stretched the belt and was slipping on the pully that engages the blades. Try that first and check the other belts for tension, wear and condition….Also make sure all springs are attached, not stretched, and in good shape…Hope this is helpful….Joe
My craftsman riding mower vibrates so bad when I engage the mower. How do I stop vibration?
Things you need to check, loose blades, blades out off balance, bad belt or loose belt, bearings in the blade mandrels worn.
Mower cranks and runs smooth until i try to engage blades or put mower in gear. it then stalls out
The seat switch is not making. You can start the mower but if you try to move it or cut, the switch is acting as if there is no operator present. Find it under the seat.
Blades turn but not fast enough to cut grass – John Deere 4020 Gas & Diesel Tractor Radiator
Sounds like one or two ploblems,,, change belt,,check tenion pully,,hope this help,, good luck
The belt that comes from the engine to mower deck keeps breaking. I’ve owned the mower for years and I have to buy atleast 12 belts per year. The problen is really bad now. A belt per cutting. I’ve raised the deck, tightened and loosened the tention, sharpened blades, changed to B v-bets to A, nothing seems to work. Changing the sise to a smaller width helped for a while. I had a service man come out my first month. He said the mower is fine. Claimed cutting to deep has to be the problem and left. I used a Ford 12 hp mower since high school 25 years ago……….no problems with it. Thought I should buy a new one because the old one looked rusty…. big mistake buying Craftsman.
I own a Craftsman rider, DTY 4000, 25 HP Kohler, 48″ cut, 137 Hrs. It eats a belt about every mowing or two. Did all the stuff you did. Good luck from Sears. Had cousin who is owns a lawn & garden repair business look at it today. Says the prob. is this – The drive belt pulley (elec clutch) has too a narrow “V” and the angle of wear between it and the deck when the deck is in the lowered (mowing) position is too severe. If you notice with the deck in the fully raised position the pulleys line up perfectly. Then drop your deck and see how tightly bent the belt is downward and it makes sense as to why(my) belt would first roll over then break in a few minutes. The elec clutch pulley is sold as one unit PT No. 179334 $250.00, but I’m sure it would come with the same narrow V pulley. Waiting for word from my cousin. My last Sears Mower. Cannot even sell it in good faith.
Mowing deck makes ticking noise when blades are engaged.
A FEW THINGS TO LOOK AT ARE ,1THE PULLY SHIELDSMAKE SURE THEY AREN’T BENT TO CLOSE TO THE PULLEY’S.2 THE PULLEY BEARING’S MAY BE WORE OUT AND TO BREAK .3LOOK UNDER THE DECK TO MAKE SURE YOU DIDN’T GET SOMETHING TRAPED IN THE CUTTING DECK.HOPE THIS HELPED.
Blade won’t engage – mower starts and propells itself, but when the yellow arm is pulled and lowered to engage the blade, nothing happens.
The blade is probably belt driven, and the belt is either broken, need adjusting, worn that bad, or there is a pulley problem. Get it in the air and check that the belt tightens. It will not be completely tight, there should be a tiny bit of play when engaged.
