How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If the engine dies when the blades engage, it could be the result of a damaged safety switch. The first step in assessing the safety switch is to make sure it is plugged in securely. The switch is located underneath the seat, and you may have to remove the seat to reach it.
An object or obstruction (such as an ant hill, clump of matted grass clippings or large tree branch) is jammed underneath the cutting deck or in the cutting deck drive system preventing the moving parts from engaging properly. Inspect for obstructions and carefully remove if necessary.
What`s happening? This is a normal function of the seat safety switch. With the blades engaged, weight from the operator allows the seat safety switch to keep the engine running.
There are a range of reasons why your car is juddering when you accelerate. Your vehicle could have dirty fuel injectors, a damaged fuel pump, a blocked catalytic converter, a faulty mass airflow sensor, broken spark plugs, or even an accumulation of moisture.

Replaceing mower deck belt on 20 hp 42 mower model no 917275660. Got the belt on. How do I get the cluch spring back on.
ANSWER : Are you refering to the spring attached to the end of the cable that runs up to the lever on the dash to engage the blades? All you needed to disconnect was that cable on top of the idler arm that’s held in place by a ‘hairpin’ and the left pulley cover to put the belt on.
Drive belt Have replace drive belt but mower still has no forward movement. Mower is only 2 years old but its already had to have another drive belt installed by the dealer last year. wanted to do it myself but when i install belt theres hardly any tension so mower doesnt move. Checked and rechecked the diagram and is installed correctly. Cant find a tensioner adjustment if it has one.
ANSWER : I don’t have an answer for you, but Do you have a diagram of the Drive Belt?
Mower won’t start
ANSWER : This may sound stupid but don’t mean it to…
Have you tried with the choke all the way open? Do you have an automatic cruise? Is the right (correct) pedal being pushed in? These will affect if it starts or not. Also if your drive belt or one of the other belts not being tight enough will affect if it starts or just turns over. Not too many things can stope it from starting with new/good battery AND if its getting gas. Try cleaning your gas line and obviously making sure there is no obstruction around or near your blade, if it does start with blade engaged that is :))
If it doesn’t start with blade engaged, well make sure it’s in neutral. Mine won’t start in reverse but will in forward or neutral.
Hope it helps.

Have a john deere sabre turn key won’t start thought battery was dead charged battery still won’t start jump start with car battery it will start then . try to engage reverse with blades running it shuts off. shut down tractor won’t start again .I,m thinking wiring not grounded but where or replacement switch somewhere.give best advise.
ANSWER : Some mowers have a mowing reverse safety switch. That safety will kill the mower if you try to reverse with the deck engaged. Some mowers even have an override button that has to be held while backing up. As for the battery thing, no matter how much you charge a bad battery you will not get it to start a mower if it has a bad cell or two. I would use a multimeter to check battery voltage, but the end result would still be the same, replace the battery.I hope this gets you going again.
My mower blades disengage when operating.
ANSWER : Not sure of your question, but if you mean, they start when you flip the switch and then disengage but the switch stays up.. you need to check two things. (1) The out put of your alternator, read the battery with a volt meter before you start it, then start up the engine and read the voltage again should be a higher reading with the engine running. 12.4 vdc with the engine off – 13.7 vdc with it running. (just an example). Next will be your seat switch. There is a switch under the seat if you are not sitting in the seat the blades should turn off. so the switch could be out of its socket, or broken.
ROUTING OF BELT – Mtd Drive Belt 42"
ANSWER : Diagram is on the mowing deckBest regardsCk
I have a Craftsman FS5500 48″ lawn mower. The PTO makes a noise (squeak) for a second when I pull up on the red blade engage knob. The blades do not engage. PTO does not turn. When I push the red button down to disengage there is a brief squeak from the PTO.
It worked well the past month then a little problem 2 weeks ago. It seemed to disengage after mowing a while. Then after sitting for 15 minutes the blades would engage. I used it earlier this week and the PTO won’t turn at all.
Just purchased from the last and original owner a month ago. He said the oil would need to be changed this summer. Could that be part of the problem? Engine runs great!
Also, I need an owners manual, not able to find from the previous owner.
Thanks
ANSWER : Hi,The problem is probably in the button that you pull and push to engaged and disengage the PTO… If you wiggle the button or try to pull it slowly, you may find a spot where it will work. But the button has gone bad and will need to be replaced. If you are comfortable with wiring, you could jumper the wires and getting it working, but it would be a very temporary and possibly dangerous fix…
The belt that comes from the engine to mower deck keeps breaking. I’ve owned the mower for years and I have to buy atleast 12 belts per year. The problen is really bad now. A belt per cutting. I’ve raised the deck, tightened and loosened the tention, sharpened blades, changed to B v-bets to A, nothing seems to work. Changing the sise to a smaller width helped for a while. I had a service man come out my first month. He said the mower is fine. Claimed cutting to deep has to be the problem and left. I used a Ford 12 hp mower since high school 25 years ago……….no problems with it. Thought I should buy a new one because the old one looked rusty…. big mistake buying Craftsman.
ANSWER : I own a Craftsman rider, DTY 4000, 25 HP Kohler, 48″ cut, 137 Hrs. It eats a belt about every mowing or two. Did all the stuff you did. Good luck from Sears. Had cousin who is owns a lawn & garden repair business look at it today. Says the prob. is this – The drive belt pulley (elec clutch) has too a narrow “V” and the angle of wear between it and the deck when the deck is in the lowered (mowing) position is too severe. If you notice with the deck in the fully raised position the pulleys line up perfectly. Then drop your deck and see how tightly bent the belt is downward and it makes sense as to why(my) belt would first roll over then break in a few minutes. The elec clutch pulley is sold as one unit PT No. 179334 $250.00, but I’m sure it would come with the same narrow V pulley. Waiting for word from my cousin. My last Sears Mower. Cannot even sell it in good faith.
