Case 530,570,630 Tractor Piston & Sleeve

My JD 4400 has always had a problem starting in cold weather, usually a boost will do the trick. This time however the battery is strong, the control panel says the glow plugs are working, the starter is cranking but still no start after several minutes of trying over a couple of days. I have thought of looking for the fuel filter but I can’t find it. I am pretty much at wits end and need some diagnostic advice to get this fixed.

Thanks,
Rhonda

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Engine oil weight that`s too heavy, low battery output, and corroded battery or starter terminals are all possible reasons for a slow cranking speed. Turning the lights of the tractor on before cranking (for about five seconds) can increase battery power in the cold.
Turn ignition key to the “ON” position which is as far as the key will go before the starter begins to crank. Wait 10 SECONDS until all gauges (including glow plug or pre-heater indicator) have reset and dashboard lights go OFF. Turn the key until the engine starts but never for more than 15 seconds.
Your car may not start in cold weather because of problems in a number of areas. battery: cold temperatures affect the chemical process inside the battery and reduce its ability to hold a charge. alternator: alternator belts can become cracked in cold temperatures, making it more difficult to power your battery.
There are a lot of factors that can affect the way a diesel engine starts in the cold. The “gelling” of diesel fuel, weak batteries and failed glow plugs are just a few of the things that can cause your truck to have difficulties starting in cold weather.
A tractor`s air cooling system consists of an air blower that circulates air to govern engine temperature. It dissipates heat from the engine`s surface, particularly the cylinder. Special baffles or fins on the air blower direct the air to the heated component without touching any hot spots along the way.
When a thermistor is failing, it`ll display incorrect temperatures, or you`ll see impossible temperature fluctuations. For example, you may initially get a reading of 210 degrees only to see the temperature drop to 189 degrees and jump back up again.
“Cycle” the Key. Make sure the radio, headlights, heater, etc., are switched to “off,” so they aren`t pulling energy from your battery and engine. Now put the key in the ignition and turn it from the “off” to the “start” position about ten times. You`re “cycling the key,” which can help warm up the battery and starter.
A start mode that restarts a task or workflow without recovery. PowerCenter Glossary of Terms.
Hold the key in the ignition for 10 seconds.

“To start a car in freezing cold winter weather, start by shutting off any accessories, like the heater, radio and lights,” she said. Then, put the keys in the ignition, turn and hold the key for up to 10 seconds.

Most attention is given to the batteries and you tend to forget other parts of the system that can also be affected by the freezing temperature. The cold weather can cause serious trouble to the starter and alternator of your vehicle as well.
If your diesel engine won`t start, the problem could be the amount of pressure in the fuel system. The engine may not start if the fuel pressure is too low. Fuel pressure that is too high can cause damage to the exhaust system while also increasing soot pollution in the exhaust.
Battery: If your diesel engine isn`t cranking fast enough, according to your vehicle`s specifications, inspect your battery`s charge and condition as well as all the connections. If the battery is low or you have a bad connection, you could have trouble starting your diesel truck.
Most diesel engines use a closed loop jacket type cooling system. Coolant flows through the engine absorbing heat from the cylinder liners, cylinder heads, and other engine components.
To prevent diesel fuel from gelling (or crystallizing) use an Anti-Gel fuel supplement. Anti-Gel drops the freezing point of diesel fuel so it is less likely to freeze in cold weather. Diesel fuel contains wax causing the fuel to gel, which can block filters.
Remove the fuel filters and fill all fuel filters with a mixture of 50% Diesel Winter Rescue and 50% diesel fuel. Reinstall the fuel filters and then start your engine. Let your engine idle to warm up the fuel system and clear any remaining gelled masses.
Checking For the Signs of a Bad Thermostat

Look to see if the coolant is swirling/flowing immediately — that means the thermostat`s stuck open. If the coolant doesn`t flow after 10 minutes or so and continues to be stagnant after the temperature gauge indicates it`s hot, the thermostat`s likely stuck closed.

The “Coolant hose blocked” factor

As your new/used tractor may become overheated even if you have added coolant in it, due to the presence of a dirty hose. And the coolant hose is supposed to be continuously run via radiator and engine to keep it cool. So, make sure that your coolant house is clean and dust-free.

The cause of such failures are usually due to mechanical separation between the resistor element and the lead material, caused by handling damage, excessive heat, thermal mismatch, etc. The second most common failure mode is drift in resistance value as the thermistor ages, or parameter change.
Being a resistive device, thermistors require bridge circuits or resistive networks, as well as a power supply to operate, so it is more probable that you are using the wrong type of thermistor, or your circuit/application requires calibrating.
The thermistor motor protection relay CM-MSS monitors the winding temperature and thus protects the motor from overheating, overload and insufficient cooling in accordance to the product standard IEC 60947-8, control units for built-in thermal protection (PTC) for rotating electrical machines.
Fuses are low resistance resistors that break the electrical circuit if excess current flows through it. Thermistors are resistors whose resistance is dependent on the temperature. Circuit breakers, thermistors and fuses are used to protect the electrical circuit from harmful surcharges.
Easy…… use a push button as a start with one of your relay contacts(or an aux relay) as a hold-in across the start button. Your float switch then becomes a series stop switch. The latter would of course have to be normally closed during normal operation.
Cold Start Off IN Kent

Our cold start delete solution does not cause any damage to the vehicle and simply ensures the engine does not rev to 1000-1500rpm on start up when cold. In stead, the engine will idle around 500rpm no matter if the engine is hot or cold. Book Online.

What`s the proper RPM range for a cold start? This will depend on your vehicle, however, a typical cold start will hover above 1,000rpm and may even initially exceed the 1,500rpm range. Do not worry, as the engine warms up the RPMs will slowly start to decrease and your motor will return to its normal idle range.

ANSWER : If you have no spark the first thing to replace the time delay module on the left rear side of engine. Its black and about 2 inches by 1 inch with yellow, red, orange and black wires going to it. Replacement is round shaped with same amount of wires. If no fuel to carb check for flow at filter, if theres flow but no pressure look for a split fuel line in tank between pump and sender.

HAVE A JOHN DEERE 318 LAWN TRACTOR, CHANGED POINTS AND CONDENSER, WON’T TURN OVER, TRIED STARTING FLUID IN CARB AND NOTHING. CAN IT BE THE COIL AND HOW DO I CHECK? THANKS
ANSWER : Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You’ll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don’t short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.
