Hi I have a John Deer L110 with Kohler command 17.5hp engine. Fault is it wont start but backfires and stalls the starter mower as though its firing against the compression – I see others have had the same problem – is it timing?

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Your John Deere Gator may backfire for several reasons, but the most common ones revolve around fuel and air mixture. It will backfire if there is too much fuel and too little oxygen or vice versa. It`s otherwise known as being “too rich or too lean.”
A spark plug that is damaged, worn, or has an improperly set gap between its electrodes creates a weak spark. As a result, the fuel may not ignite in the cylinder, but it might ignite when it reaches the hot exhaust muffler. The result is a loud backfire.
Why do I sometimes hear a loud backfire noise when I shut off my engine? Backfire, or more accurately “after fire” when it occurs when stopping an engine, is caused by unburned fuel/air mixture being ignited by the heat of the muffler.
Backfires and afterfires are worth paying attention to since they can cause engine damage, power loss, and decreased fuel efficiency. There`s a variety of factors that can cause your car to backfire, but the most common ones are having a poor air to fuel ratio, a misfiring spark plug, or good old-fashioned bad timing.
A backfire is caused by a combustion or explosion that occurs when unburnt fuel in the exhaust system is ignited, even if there is no flame in the exhaust pipe itself. Sometimes a flame can be seen when a car backfires, but mostly you will only hear a loud popping noise, followed by loss of power and forward motion.
Another possible cause of your backfire is a spark plug refusing to “spark” when the exhaust valve opens. If the air/fuel mixture has become too rich, unburned fuel is left in the exhaust system. The misfired spark plug ignites the rich air/fuel mixture, causing a loud “bang” in the tail pipe.
The problem with the Holley power valve is that it is the most sensitive circuit in the carburetor. The little rubber diaphragm has a tendency to tear or just plain fail at usually the most inopportune times. It is especially vulnerable to engine backfires.
On the other end of the spectrum, a bad fuel pump, vacuum leak, or clogged fuel injectors could cause an air-fuel ratio that`s too lean; that is, it has too much air and not enough fuel. Though this is the opposite problem, it can also cause a backfire as vapor escapes into the exhaust and combusts there.
Engine Backfires

Backfiring can damage other parts of your car if it`s allowed to continue, so it should always be checked out. But it`s sometimes caused by the ignition coil failing to ignite the fuel in the combustion cycle, and allowing it to infiltrate the exhaust system.

Spake plug is not spakeing – John Deere Original 130 160 165 175 180 185 Operators
ANSWER : Hi Lloyd
Make sure you are getting spark at the spark plug, to do this:Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting a bright blue spark at the spark plug. You do this by grounding the plug on the head of the engine and cranking the engine or by pulling the crank rope…watching the plug for spark. If you are getting a nice blue spark then skip A below and go to B.
A…If you do not get a nice blue spark then you may need to replace the electronic module.Note: If you have to replace the module be sure to measure the position it is in, it is critical to starting. The clearance can be measured with a “business card”…use the card for the right clearance between the coil and the flywheel.Take a picture for later reassembly.
B…Also take some fine grit sandpaper (not emery) and lightly sand the flywheel where the magnet is located to clean any rust or corrosion from the magnet area. Please rate meBud

I have John Deere GX345. It does not start consistently. When it doesn’t start the plugs have no spark. The problem is intermittent. All electrical connections look clean and no corrosion. Re- seated all connections. Fuel flow is good because I can smell raw fuel while cranking the motor. I replaced the fuel lines last year. Thank you for your help. Daryl Witowski
ANSWER : Look for a small silver box with 1 wire on it mounted to the motor. It is a temp sensor and will keep it from firing…Just had to replace mine…

My Tractor (425) won't start – John Deere 420,1020,2010,2020,2510,2520 Tractor Float
ANSWER : If you have no spark the first thing to replace the time delay module on the left rear side of engine. Its black and about 2 inches by 1 inch with yellow, red, orange and black wires going to it. Replacement is round shaped with same amount of wires. If no fuel to carb check for flow at filter, if theres flow but no pressure look for a split fuel line in tank between pump and sender.
