How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If your Jet-Vac is sluggish and not moving along the pool floor properly, then check and clean the pool filter, skimmer basket, pump basket, debris bag and wall fitting strainer. Ensure that both the pool pump and booster pump are operating correctly.
If you have a suction pool cleaner that is not moving, check the cleaner hose. It should be firmly attached to the suction line in the skimmer or the cleaner line. If you check these and they are all connected, the next thing to do would be to make sure there are no air leaks in the hose.
The Pool Cleaner Is Not moving

This is usually associated with suction problems caused by either a blockage or air in the vacuum hose. The first thing you want to do is to make sure that the water level in your pool is high enough that it covers the weir and return jets.

For a suction pool cleaner that is not working at all, the first step is to check the cleaner hose to make sure that it is firmly attached to the suction line in the skimmer. Check the hose sections to make sure there are no air leaks, either where the hose sections join together, or from splits or holes in the hose.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
If your Kreepy Krauly is often stuck at one side of your pool there are two potential fixes. If the hose is too short then buy another line and have it extended out enough to cover the pool. On the other hand, if it is constantly being coiled then relaxing it or changing how you keep it stored will fix that problem.
While the pump is off, lather the joints, seams, and any other parts of the suction-side plumbing with an evenly applied layer of shaving cream. Turn on the pump. Inspect the shaving cream covered dimpling. These dimples are signs the cream is being pulled in by an air leak.
The most common reason for weak jets is an air leak. An air leak would come from the suction side of the system. This would be the area between the skimmer and the pump. One way to determine if you have an air leak is by looking for air bubbles coming out of the return jets.
Check if the pump or filter basket needs cleaning, or if your filter needs backwashing or cleaning. Check there are no leaks in the hose or flexible hose connector. If there are, replace any damaged sections. Check the main drain and all suction lines are closed.
Check the Rotator Brush and Wheels

Sometimes pieces of string or other objects get wrapped around your vacuum`s rotating brush or around the wheels of the vacuum. Unplug your vacuum. Turn it over and have a look at the wheels and brush. If you see any pieces of string or objects lodged there, remove them.

My intex sand filter will not move water when I put the lever to filter? It will move water when I put the lever to recirc but wont move water with filter…why?
ANSWER : Im gonna guess that you stored the filter improperly off season and now the sand charge is hard as cement inside not alowing water to get thru , left alone for a week or so it might loosen up , but the best thing is to dissasemble filter and remove all sand and ck “fingers” inside this is fastest way
i allways use RV antifreeze 30/1 to store any pumps or filters off season , RV type because its nontoxic

Same prob. ray vac circles bottom of deep end. tink2b3 suggested moving the gears? what does that mean?
ANSWER : Mabey the gears in the backup valve a small football in line about 18″ from wall. Just pull it from the water if you have one that is about every one to two munites it should send a jet of water out the side of the backup valve for about ten or fifteen seconds. If it dosen’t you need a new one . Quite often a more likliy problem is tight swivels your local pool store can ck these for you and the leingth of your hose should just make the far point of the pool so it streches the hose and pulls all the kinks and loops out. Your pool store can help you with much of this and they will check the whole unit if you bring it in to the store and will usually just charge for parts.

Ray vac has stopped moving
ANSWER : The rear jet could be the problem?

I have a Utilitech brand one-horse motor convertible jet pump. The pump is running, and I’m down 43 feet to the bottom of my well. From the top to the water level is 32 feet, and I have 11 feet of water. When it’s not pumping, it sits at 20 PSI When it’s pumping water, it sits at 11 PSI. But then just pumps for appr. 10 minutes, and then shuts off. I can wait awhile & pick the pipe up and down, and it starts pumping again. Then I shut the faucet off and it goes back up to 20 PSI. Then I turn it on & drops down to 11 PSI. I do not lose my prime, and I have no leaks. This is a brand new pump. \r\n I had a 1/2 horsepower pump for several years, and just replaced it with this one horsepower pump, and I can’t get it to work right. When it’s pumping water, it pumps at 11 PSI. I have my foot valve at 4 1/2 feet from the bottom.
