You answered your own question with your last sentence. Your solution though is the what you really are in need of young Jedi. Hmm! Take off your carb and clean it thoroughly inside there are little ports that might be clogged and most of time they are, you need to dig deeper. If your float bowl has a screw on the bottom most cases there is a little pin hole located on the side of it, poke it with a needle or pin in the hole to clean it. Good Luck PAL
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die
By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.
An engine that will fire and run with the choke closed but dies when the choke is opened likely has debris at least partially blocking the fuel passages in the carburetor. In this condition the closed choke provides enough extra fuel to enter the engine to overcome the lack of fuel flowing through the other passages.
Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
If your bike is only running with the choke on, it`s probably because it`s running too lean. This can be caused by a few different things: All internal combustion engines need three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. If any of these are missing or not working properly, the engine won`t run.
It will not damage the engine at all. All that will happen is that it will run richer, thus using more fuel. If you did it for thousands of miles you`d probably end up with more deposits in the engine/exhaust, but even that is easy to sort.
Choke – Choke set to full to start a cold engine, after the engine warms up move the choke to the fast setting. Some mowers use a snowflake symbol for the choke.
Dirty air filter If your mower loses power and then won`t restart, it might be due to dirty air filters. What is this? This is a simple problem to check and fix. Make sure the filters are clean and in good working order and try again.
The spark plugs are worn or damaged If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.
A lawn mower that only runs with the choke on might be having problems with the carburetor, air supply, or bad fuel. Maintaining a clean carburetor will make the fuel delivery system run smoothly. Use high-quality fuel to extend the lawn mower`s life.
Other things that could cause this issue are bad fuel, weak/colapsed/kinked fuel line, faulty spark plug, faulty ignition/coil, oil over full, clogged air filter, plugged/dirty carburetor, worn engine parts internal rings/valves/etc.
