How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

There are three basic sizes of shear bolts, and it`s important to select the correct one for your snowblower to ensure it fits and works correctly. Brass 1/4″ shear bolts are most commonly used on smaller, entry-level snowblowers. Black 5/16″ shear bolts are for larger mid-grade snowblowers.
Reference the service parts section of your owner`s manual to identify the correct part number for your unit. You will need a shear pin that shears at the proper torque. If you use a pin that can handle more torque than your machine, you risk causing extensive damage to your snow blower.
Can I use a grade 8 bolt to replace the shear pin? No. Damage to the unit will occur if a higher grade bolt is used in place of the original.
Toro two-stage snowblowers do not use shear pins. Why? Because a Toro two-stage snowblower is designed so that if it does take in an object it can`t handle, the engine stops right away so you can safely clear the obstruction.
The shear pins are designed to break so that the auger shaft and gears can keep spinning freely without the additional friction from a jammed object. If the augers were permanently attached to the shaft, the jammed object will eventually cause significant damage to the gear case causing the need for replacement.
Titanium is the perfect metal for shear pins. Like platinum and gold, titanium is an element near the top of the galvanic scale and its resistance to corrosion of all kinds is legendary, reducing the cost of corrosion-related maintenance and replacement to zero.
A very simple example is the plastic or wire loop affixed to the handles of common fire extinguishers. Its presence prevents accidental discharge by only allowing the handle to be depressed once a high amount of initial force is applied; by breaking, it allows the handle to subsequently be depressed more easily.
Not a shear pin. Clevis pin or picker pin. Basically a 3/8 straight pin that a cotter key goes through to hold the pin in.
Shear bolts are designed to fail under a specific amount of force, whereas regular bolts are not. Shear bolts are typically made from a weaker material than regular bolts so that they will fail before the object they are holding together does.
Shear pins are safety devices designed to shear in the case of a mechanical overload, protecting other parts from damage. This Shear Pins & Nuts Assortment features variants engineered with 1/4″-20 and 5/16″-18 coarse thread sizes.
A split pin (cotter pin in American usage) can also be used as a shear pin.

I have a Echo leaf blower and I can get it running but then it’s cuts off after just a few seconds. It has new plug, air filter and fuel filter. What else could it be?
ANSWER : The carburetor could be dirty and need a good cleaning and you could first remove the fuel pump cover (cover without the vent hole) to the carburetor and look for the small, round, fine-mesh screen. Sometimes it gets covered with dirt and debris and has to be cleaned as it allows the fuel to flow into the metering side of the carburetor.

ANSWER : I don’t think the oil-gas ratio will cause that problem. Did you check to see if the fuel lines or fuel filter is clogged?

I have a Toro 51598 electric leaf blower. Last year a breaker in the electrical box tripped and the blower naturally stopped. But, the episode seemed to have damaged the variable-air-flow-dial which on the blower – it was either on or off, nothing inbetween worked. This year, after some solid hours of operation, it just stopped working regardless of where where the variable-air-flow-dial was set. It is worth replacing that variable-air-flow-dial and some related components, or is there likely something else wrong with it? The bushings seem fine.
ANSWER : These machines are considered “disposable” items and most service centers won’t even repair them, saying that it is not “cost effective.” I have never come across a parts list for one other than maybe the plastic housing on them (they may exist), but costwise you may be better off getting another tool unless the Toro is still under warranty.
