A closed center system, while more expensive perhaps, is usually more efficient as it is not continuously sending oil through the valve when it is not being used. Consequently, less energy and less fuel is used – which results in savings on fuel costs.
Three common varieties of hydraulic fluids found on the market today are petroleum-based, water-based and synthetics. Petroleum-based or mineral-based fluids are the most widely used fluids today. These fluids offer a low-cost, high quality, readily available selection.
In an open loop system, the fluid cycles through, returning to the tank at the end of the cycle. There, it loses heat before being cycled through the system again. A closed loop system does not allow for this heat dissipation.
A closed loop circuit can operate smoothly in forward and reverse directions without a directional valve being involved. Thus, a closed loop (hydrostatic) system offers a way to finely control the speed and direction of a motor. Unlike an open loop hydraulic system, fluid does not flow to a reservoir, but flows directly back to the pump (which is why the term “closed loop” is used to describe this type of circuit).
Hydraulic equipment used indoors under normal service conditions generally use a conventional antiwear hydraulic oil with the appropriate viscosity. The most commonly used viscosities are ISO 32, 46, or 68, since these are able to lubricate and protect the system under the normal range of operating temperatures.
Petroleum-based fluids: Petroleum-based oils,also called mineral oils, are the most widely used fluids in hydraulic systems.
Turbine, compressor, pump, boiler, heat exchangers, etc.. are examples of the open loop hydraulic system. For simple applications, open loop hydraulic systems are efficient and cheaper.
Closed-center circuits supply full pressure to the control valves, whether any valves are actuated or not. The pumps vary their flow rate, pumping very little hydraulic fluid until the operator actuates a valve. The valve`s spool, therefore, doesn`t need an opencenter return path to tank.
A disadvantage of the open loop circuit design is its relatively large size and weight due to the large volume of oil required. In a closed loop circuit design a single hydraulic pump is used to drive one or more hydraulic motors.
There are many types of hydraulic motors, but the most efficient type is a rotary vane motor. This type of motor uses a series of vanes to turn the rotor, which in turn produces mechanical power.
