I bought a tractor that does not have 100 PTO.
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
You do mean a 100 rpm pto up to a 540 rpm pto correct ?

tractors that have the wrong rpm are difficult to speed up as your going to have to give up shaft power (Horsepower) to do this so if your implement is already drawing your hP down , adding a speed increaser is going to make things worse

some out of the “normal” box things ive seen folks using the belly mower take off instead of rear pto , belly mower take off’s are sometimes a higher speed but again have less power than rear pto points

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

Operators can easily switch between 540 and 1000 rpm-driven implements simply by removing the stub shaft and reversing its position. The reversible 540/1000 PTO stub shaft is located in a dry cavity to allow changing from 540 to 1000 rpm or vice versa without any oil spillage.
Power Take-Off (PTO) Stub

The PTO and drive shaft rotate at 540 rpm (9 times/second) or 1,000 rpm (16.6 times/second) when operating at full recommended speed. At all speeds, they rotate in proportion to the speed of the tractor engine.

When operated at full recommended speed, a PTO shaft will rotate clockwise at 540 revolutions per minute (rpm), which equals 9 revolutions per second, or at 1,000 rpm (16.7 revolutions per second). As shown in the Table 1, a 540 rpm shaft travels 7.1 feet per second, while a 1,000 rpm shaft turns 13.1 feet per second.
Proper engine speed for the 1000-rpm PTO shaft is 2000 engine rpm.
The 540/540 Economy PTO allows operators to select the engine rpm needed for their power take-off (PTO) application. The economy position provides 540 rpm to the PTO at 1700 engine rpm.
If it is a higher HP tractor then you would want a 1000 rpm mower. If you are using a smaller tractor you would want a 540 rpm. It depends on the horsepower of the tractor and size of the implement. Horsepower is a factor of torque multiplied by speed.
However, other aspects of the machine, like the transmission, clutches, hydraulics, and more may need to be replaced to keep the tractor in good running order. A general rule of thumb is that 2,000 to 2,500 hours is well broken-in while anything above 35,000 hours is considered high.
PTO speed is stated as a percentage of engine speed. An example being the required pump speed of 1000 RPM and having an engine operating speed of 1500 RPM. The percentage of PTO to engine speed would be calculated to approximately two-thirds, or approximately 67 percent (e.g. 1000/1500 = 66.67, or 67%).
If the PTO is too long, both PTO Halves must be shortened by equal amounts. Make sure the drive shaft length is compatible with the dif- ferent working positions of the implement. If the PTO shaft is too long it might bind and damage may occur to unit / PTO / tractor.
1000-rpm PTO is available. This 20-spline shaft is designed for high-power, heavy PTO loads that require full horsepower above 150 PTO hp, such as grain carts, rotavators, and silage choppers.
The PTO drive should be disengaged when the joint angle exceeds 45 degrees or the joint angles are unequal. The maximum operating angle is 25 degrees. However for short periods at reduced output the maximum angle where contact between PTO drive shaft guard and rotating components is avoided is 45 degrees.
In most of today`s cars, an idle speed of 600 to 1000 RPMs is average.

However for short periods at reduced output the maximum angle where contact between PTO drive shaft guard and rotating components is avoided is 45 degrees.
Reverse PTO can turn in the reverse direction using a lever or button. This is essential when operating implements that can get stuck such as a thresher or post hole digger. With economy PTO, the tractor operates at the required 540 rpm at the PTO, but with lower engine rpm.

When you replace the pto clutch (717-04080), does it have a tight fit with a bracket or does it have a little play.
ANSWER : There shouldn’t be any play in it. This should fit snug unless you have rubber bushings on the bracket mount to help compensate the torque of the belt engaging.
