How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Debris, such as solidified particles from the spray liquid, can accumulate inside the spray gun and cause patchy or blocked spraying. Blockages occur most frequently at the tip of the spray gun (the air cap and liquid outlet).
Each type of spray gun has a different distance that is best to hold it from the products surface. For an HVLP Spray Gun, you should typically hold the spray gun 6 – 8 inches from the products surface. For a conventional spray gun, a bit of a greater distance like 8 – 10 inches is typically better.
A conventional spray gun uses air to atomize paint and to provide a spray or fan pattern. Paint flows through a tube from a paint pot pressurized from 8 to 30 psi. Atomizing air is supplied to the gun tip from 30 to 90 psi.
Causes: Air pressure too high. Material not properly reduced (Suction feed). Gun tip too far from work surface. Gun motion too fast.
A fluttering occurs when the nozzle is not tight enough. Inspect the nozzle for looseness or stripping of the nozzle threads before tightening. A clogged nozzle will produce an undesirable spray pattern. Clean and replace the nozzle and other damaged seals or o-rings.
In terms of miles per hour, the most common application speed ranges between 10-16 mph for self-propelled sprayers. Any faster and a grower risks not achieving uniform coverage, or creating spray drift.
Buy yourself a good high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) spray gun and practice painting with water. Water? “Yes, water is thinner than paint, so when you get to the point where you can apply water without it running off, you`re ready to paint,” Deardorff advises novice painters. “It shows you have control of the gun.”
What is the difference between HVLP or LVLP spray systems? The major difference between the two is HVLP is complaint with 10 PSI at the air cap and offers the best transfer efficiency of the two. HVLP guns use more CFM and will require users to size their air compressor accordingly.
Try to operate at a spray pressure that`s in the middle of the nozzle`s operating range. For an air-induced nozzle, the range is usually from 30 to 90 psi, so the middle is 60 to 70 psi. That should be the target pressure.
This often happens with very thin material like stains that you are trying to keep coating to a small amount. To remedy this try applying a little more pressure to the coating and then using your fluid adjustment knob to restrict fluid to the spray gun.

If no pressure is felt then the sprayer isn`t getting pressure in the first place, so the most probable cause is a faulty, missing or dry plunger O-ring or leaking non return valve. Replace or lubricate as necessary.
SOLUTION: This common problem is also known as “fluttering”. Symptoms of fluttering include a pulsing spray and/or hissing sound. This can happen when a loose nozzle causes air to escape. To tighten the nozzle, simply use a socket or line wrench to turn the nozzle clockwise. This should fix the issue.

How do i rewind the recoil spring on my craftsman lawn mower?
ANSWER : Normally these small engines use a clock spring to retract the rope.
Remove the cover on the top and you should find the spring either broken or the tab where the spring end has broken off or jumped out of the mount.
You will need to pre-load the spring with enough tension to retract the rope.
Remove the pull handle from the rope, load the spring and then wrap the rope around the pully holding the pully and spring in the loaded position. place the end of the rope through the hole and tie up the handle. The rope should pull and retract without being installed on the engine.
