forward or back well. It would eventually work, when I did everything just right, but slowly. After another use or two, it quit moving at all. (It starts with no problem, and the blades work fine.) I looked at it until I noticed that the ground drive belt seemed crazy loose and while the pulleys were turning, it wasn’t. Thinking that didn’t seem right, I went to my local Sears and the salesman agreed it sounded like a loose belt, so he ordered me a Hydro Ground Drive Belt, part no. 140218. When it arrived, I noticed it’s white instead of black like my old one, and seems 6+” shorter. I attempted to install it per the instructions in my manual. I get it around the mandrel and idler pulleys with no problem, but there’s no way I’m getting it around the clutch pulley. In my further research, I’m wondering if it would more likely be the motion belt, anyway, if it’s a belt issue at all. I would appreciate any help/insight. Thank you!

Rotary walk-behind lawn mowers are generally powered with gasoline and have engines that are two horsepower to seven horsepower. Riding lawn mowers, on the other hand, have 13 horsepower to 30 horsepower engines because they`re so much bigger and heavier.
Builders suggest a standard deck size and an allowance of anywhere from 20 to 24 square feet per person, so a deck designed for ten people would need to be at least 240 square feet in size. Consider planning for a 12 ft by 12 ft deck to start and adjust size and dimensions from that point.

In 2006 I purchased an automatic transmission Craftsman lawn tractor, model YS 4500 / 917.276641. A couple of months ago, it started not going forward or back well. I looked at it until I noticed that the ground drive belt seemed crazy loose and while the pulleys were turning, it wasn’t. To whom it may concern, I have a 42″ Deck Craftsman Lawn Mower which I bought 10 years ago. Last year, when ever I going over tall grass, excessive smoke came out of the exhaust. I kept loosing oil. At time, the engine looked like it is about to be on fire. After some research and questions from friends, I realized that it is time to change piston rings. Last week, I took the engine apart to replace the rings and put the engine back according to how I took it apart. I was very proud of my self since I never work on engine to this extend before. Yesterday, I was looking forward to starting it, however, it did not turn over at all. Battery power was there. I hooked it to a running car for power, with the battery on the tractor of course. All I heard was a single click from the starter. The fly wheel did not turn even I tried to turn it with a metal bar and a wrench. A friend told me that when putting the engine back, I must have missed the “Top Dead Center?”, therefore, the engine will not crank. Would you kindly point me to the right direction if I take it apart again and put it back properly. Is there a mark somewhere I should follow in side the engine crank shaft, crank case, etc.. Is there an instruction I can purchase for someone who know very about engine but willing to work on it due to my interested in fixing and learning. Thank you for your assistant! Tri
ANSWER : Recommend going to auto parts store and getting a small engine repair manual. Or, if time is not an issue, most repair manuals can be ordered online. Try M & D Mowers. Very inexpensive.
My mower turns on fine but when i press the gas it moves slowly it picks up speed but not like normal
ANSWER : Drive belt must be slipping on the tranny check for wear and replace..good luck
Took my 1715 in to have the drive belt replaced, and when I got it back and went to mow, the electric PTO engaged, but the blades turned slowly, and bogged down in tall grass.
After engaging and disengaging the clutch and raising and lowering the deck in an attempt to get a feel for the problem, I noticed and smelled belt smoke, so I turned her off and looked underneath and saw a lot of slack in the deck belt. The deck belt was not correctly behind the idler pulley. At this point the PTO switch would not disengage, preventing the mower from even starting, but she would at least crank.
I took it back and showed the mechanic, who lowered the deck, put the belt around the pulley correctly, adjusted the three clutch bolts, then I attempted to start and she wouldn’t even turn over. He claims the clutch bearings may be frozen, all I know is it was fine before I took it to him.
It was very discouraging because when I took it to him, the clutch was fine, only thing wrong was the drive belt.
Question:
1. It seems as if the mechanic forgot to run the deck belt around the idler pulley – would the resulting slack in the deck belt damage the clutch in any way? If so, how? Is there reason to believe that the minor adjustment he made would cause the mower to not crank?
Any comments or help you could give would be much appreciated, it seems very strange.
Regards,
Chris

I took off the rear wheel to put air in it and have it poped back on the rim since replaceing the wheel the tractor will not ingage in to foward or reverce gear . is there some trick to this
ANSWER : Often there is a keyway in the axle corresponding to another on the inside of the rim hub. Did you check this and make sure the key is there. If the key is gone the axle’s turning will not spin the tire.
How can I tell if my fuel filter needs to be replaced. My mower the ys 4500 quit running the other day so I figured it was the fuel filter or line but how can I tell if it is the problem
ANSWER : Hello. IF your spark plugs are good, and your air filter is clean, and your fuel tank is not close to empty, the next thing to check is the fuel line and the fuel filter. As a general rule, I change the fuel filter every 40 hours and the fuel line every 200 hours. J.
