Yard – Man 160cc, 21″ Self – Propelled Lawn Mower

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
You have to tension the spring before installing the cord. Remove the cord. Put the recoil assembly in a vise. Prepare the ends of the cord so they can be threaded into place. Spin the pulley in the proper direction until it is tight. Align the hole in the housing with the hole in the pulley. Thread the rope in and knot it and pull tight. Slowly let the spring tension retract the rope. Cut the rope to length, install handle, knot and test.

The operator pulls the rope`s handle or grip. This causes the rope to unwind around the crankshaft and spin it. The spinning motion of the crankshaft cranks the engine. The crankshaft`s motion engages the flywheel, enabling the engine to start.

MODEL SERIES A4 HIT SEWER CLEAN OUT NOW PULL STRING WONT PULL OUT , i AM GUESSING SHEER BOLT?
ANSWER : Let’s see if we can get thru this problem leaving you with a smile on your face rather than a frown.First look under the deck of your mower. Check to see if the blade may have bent and wedged up against the deck bottom to the point that would not allow the pull cord to be pulled, if this is so remove the blade. Second check with blade off to see if the engine will rotate, i.e pull the pull cord . If the engine rotates with no obstructions you should install a new blade. Third if the engine still doesn’t start then you have sheared the timing key. Remove the top cover to the engine and any other attachments, remove the flywheel, replace the shear key. You should then be good to go. Take your time, take a look, it may not be as difficult as you think. GOOD LUCK>

What to do when craftsman mower pull cord won’t recoil?
ANSWER : Sounds like the spring inside the recoil has either broken or let go so it won’t recoil. If you are lucky it could be the wheel that the cord goes on is seized or stuck. You can take the recoil off most mowers by taking out two or three screws and lifting it off the engine. They can be repaired but it takes time having to be careful the spring won’t spin and hurt you. I have even taken a recoil off another engine and if the holes for the little screws don’t line up just drill little holes beside the old ones and reinstall the little screws.
I even used a 18 volt cordless drill to crank the engine using the bolt on the fly wheel and the right size socket. Leaving the recoil off You have an electric start that way.

MTD Yard Machines 22” mower, pull cord won’t extend

22″ Yard Machine Push Mower: how long should i make my pull cord when i replace…
ANSWER : Long enough that when you pull it you don’t hit feel it come to the end of the rope. Short enough that it winds all the way up. When I replace these things I use a little more than an arms length. 3 foot or so. I wind the spring till it is tight then slide a screw driver through the top to hold the wheel so I can thread the cord and knot it. Then I let it wind itself up until it stops and then add handle and pull just enough tension on it to tie the knot in the handle and make sure it pulls the handle snug to the housing.
