ncerning. This year the noise can be heard over the engine especially when the tractor is under load or coasting down hill in gear. Sounds like the differential needs lubrication but there are no fill plugs or grease fittings to be found. Please help. Thanks

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
This sound is the result of friction from the gear teeth meshing inside the transaxle casing. These gears will wear slightly over time, and this sound should decrease. If the noise suddenly becomes louder, we suggest that an authorized service center inspect the unit.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
One of the more serious noises is a rattling sound, as this can signify that you have loose parts that might come dislodged. The minute you hear rattling, it is imperative that you tighten the blade, flywheel, and other parts.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
What are the symptoms of bad gas? If your lawn mower is difficult to start, idles roughly, stalls out, or makes a “pinging” sound, you may have a case of “bad gas”.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters Dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons lawn mowers sputter. Dirt can be present in the apertures that lead from the carburetor and the fuel filter and interrupt the flow of fuel supply to the combustion chamber. You want to be sure to clean or replace dirty air filters.
Troy-Bilt riding mowers have a 10-year service life, and with proper maintenance, they can last up to 20 years, according to our research.
The most common cause of excessive vibration is an unbalanced blade. If you`ve recently had your blade sharpened, it`s possible the blade hasn`t been properly balanced during the sharpening process. To fix this, the blade should be removed, rebalanced and refitted.
Take a look at the blade under the mower deck. Sometimes the knocking sound you hear could be the result of a loose, bent or wobbling blade. If you`ve recently removed or replaced the blade and it suddenly started knocking, this is quite possibly the cause of your issue.
Why would the cutting belt chirp or squeak when the cutting deck is first engaged? These belts are designed to suddenly grasp several pulleys and quickly get them up to a high RPM quickly. A short chirp or squeak is normal, especially when related components are new.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.

To whom it may concern, I have a 42″ Deck Craftsman Lawn Mower which I bought 10 years ago. Last year, when ever I going over tall grass, excessive smoke came out of the exhaust. I kept loosing oil. At time, the engine looked like it is about to be on fire. After some research and questions from friends, I realized that it is time to change piston rings. Last week, I took the engine apart to replace the rings and put the engine back according to how I took it apart. I was very proud of my self since I never work on engine to this extend before. Yesterday, I was looking forward to starting it, however, it did not turn over at all. Battery power was there. I hooked it to a running car for power, with the battery on the tractor of course. All I heard was a single click from the starter. The fly wheel did not turn even I tried to turn it with a metal bar and a wrench. A friend told me that when putting the engine back, I must have missed the “Top Dead Center?”, therefore, the engine will not crank. Would you kindly point me to the right direction if I take it apart again and put it back properly. Is there a mark somewhere I should follow in side the engine crank shaft, crank case, etc.. Is there an instruction I can purchase for someone who know very about engine but willing to work on it due to my interested in fixing and learning. Thank you for your assistant! Tri
ANSWER : Recommend going to auto parts store and getting a small engine repair manual. Or, if time is not an issue, most repair manuals can be ordered online. Try M & D Mowers. Very inexpensive.

I have a Crafstman Riding mower model #917.273643. That ran fine one second, I shut it off for five minutes. When I went to start it back up it wouldn’t start. Cranks fine, checked the wires, fuse, and spark plug. The plug was dirty so I cleaned it. But I am not getting any spark. I bought a new plug still no spark. I also checked the plug on another motor and I had spark so the plug wasn’t bad. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this or what may be wrong?
