I have a Craftsman mower, model 917.273810, and when you engage the blades, the brake pads that are used to stop the blades from turning when you disengage the blades…won’t release and it trys to stall the mower….is there an adjustment for the brake pads to make the release the pullies?
ANSWER : Sounds like you have a broken spring #148 on diagram, part #169022 that holds the idler arm back. Go to www.searspartsdirect.com and enter the model # of your mower and click on the mower deck to print drawing out, take your deck off the mower and see if all the springs are ok. If the pads are closed on the pulleys and the pads release when you turn the idler arm, the deck is ok. The problem will be a bad or disconnected safety switch that cuts the motor off if you try to ingage the mower. If the switch is disconnected under the seat it will kill the engine when the mower is engaged. I had this problem on my mower, just plug the wiring into this switch or replace it if it is bad.

I had hit a somewhat hidden stump on the lawn..bending the blade. Took the deck off and replaced the bent blade. Put the deck back on and now the cut seems uneven. It appears that the deck is now uneven. I attempted to follow the directions for a side-to-side leveling. Started with trying to measure the blade height and am struggling with getting to a spot where I can measure the blade on the left side. By looking at the deck, it appears to be uneven. I am struggling with being able to raise the left side of the deck.
ANSWER : I’ve only had luck removeing the deck, turn it upside down. Measure blade, mark, remove blade, insert large pipe over spindle, bend in direction. Re-install blade, and do it all over and over till straight. Measure in several locations.

I have a 17 HP 42″ craftsman mower. When I disengage the blade lever, the blades do not fully disengage until I slow down the engine with the throttle lever. This has only begun recently. The tractor is 7 years old. I replaced the drive belt this past May.
ANSWER : There are blade brakes, one on each blade pulley. You will need to check that the brakes are in good working order and that the springs holding them against the pulleys are in place. Also there is a spring to return the idler pulley to the neutral position. The spring could be broken or the idler pivot rusted not allowing it to return to fully neutral position. This should get you going down the right track. Hope this helps; please vote yes. Thank you.
