So if your switch was running at 20/40 (on at 20 psi off at 40 psi), and you tighten this nut 3 1/2 turns, you`ll increase both numbers so that the switch will now operate at 30/50 (on at 30 psi and off at 50 psi).
Most switches are adjustable. So, if you buy a 30/50 switch, you should be able to adjust it to 40/60 if necessary. However, you`ll need to check the maximum pressure the pump can withstand first. If it can only tolerate 50 pounds of pressure, you won`t be able to set your switch to 40/60.
To increase or lower both cut-on and cut-off pressure you will turn the nut on top of the large center spring as seen in the picture below. You will turn the nut counterclockwise to lower both cut-on and cut-off pressure or turn the nut clockwise to raise both cut-on and cut-off pressure.
Adjustment of the pressure switch is made while the power is isolated from the pump. To increase the cut out pressure of the Telemechanique XMP pressure switch turn the large thumb dial clockwise. Reconnect the power and allow the pump to run in its normal operating condition.
The screw acts as a water pressure regulator. If you tighten the screw the water pressure will be more and if you loosen the screw the water pressure will be less. Turn the screw clockwise to tighten it and increase the pressure, or turn it counterclockwise to decrease the pressure. Do not be too hasty.
Specifications: Pressure switch Square D 40/60 PSI. FSG2. Can be changed to 50/70 Switch by adjusting inner bolt.
Typically a 20/40 psi switch could be set up to a 50 psi cutoff and work OK, but if you set the pressure higher than your pump can reach the pump will just keep running; Watch out: I would not set the pressure over 50 in any case; both to protect the pump and to avoid overpressurizing the tank.
For example 40/60 psi, the tank should be set to 38 psi.
A well pressure switch works by turning a well pump on when the system`s pressure decreases to the cut-on point and switching it off when the pressure increases to the cut-off point. Common thresholds for pressure in a well system are 40 and 60 psi, 30 and 50 psi, and 20 and 40 psi.
All Pressure switches have two operating points known as the cut-in (Reset Point) and cut-out (Trip Point) settings. The cut-in point is for the falling pressure and the cut-out point is for the rising pressure. Every switch also includes a differential or a range based on the cut-in and cut-out points.
For a single level home or a two story home without water fixtures on the 2nd floor a 30/50 PSI setting may be sufficient. For two or more levels with water fixtures on more than one level you may want to use 40/60 PSI setting. It`s easier for a pump to supply the lower pressures and it`s less strain on old plumbing.
No matter what kind of pump you`re working with, adjusting the PSI to raise or lower the range is easy, and can be done with just a standard wrench. Keep reading to learn how you can adjust the pressure switch on your pump to get the pressure you need in your home.

Watch the pressure switch until your submersible well pump kicks on. If the pump kicks on at 30 psi, your tank is likely set at 30/50. If your pump turns on at 40, your pressure switch is probably set to 40/60. To make sure, turn off the faucet and wait until the well pump turns off.
