Put on a pair of pants that fits well and stand in a relaxed position. Then wrap a soft tape measure through the belt loops so the tape is snug but not too tight. This measurement is your belt size. You may need to round up to the nearest even-numbered inch.
Start the tape measure at the hole you currently use and measure to the end of the belt, where it meets the buckle (not the end of the buckle). Belts are measured in inches and you should round up to the nearest inch. If you measure 36 inches, you will want to purchase a size 36 belt.
Why Does Your Riding Mower Belt Keep Coming Off? Your riding mower belt keeps coming off because of several possible causes such as a damaged, dirty, or incorrectly installed belt. This problem can also be due to an oil leak, damaged mower pulleys, damaged bearings, or a misaligned or stretched out belt.
A: Your mower has two belts. Both play a role in making the blades turn. The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before.

I replaced the rear drive belt and now I only can go forward, what did I do wrong or what can I do to check this?
ANSWER : Your belt is not on right. MTDs use a tension system for the drive belts to control speed. You either missed a pulley or got one backwards.Check here for diagrams. You will need the model # for your tractor but is a good site for all kinds of mowers
