ver past two weeks. Today I have a problem… the large belt driving the blades keeps disengaging as soon as I set the blade depth. I don’t have a manual or much experience with ride ons so would appreciate any advice. By the way I have been careful when rewinding the blades onto the forward wheel not to place the pully over the two guide (?) pins. Also, when not engaged the pulley is very loose!

Many thanks

Hello,
My name is Dane and I am going to help you solve your problem. You said that the “Pulley” is loose when the blades are disengaged. I hope you meant that the belt is loose, because the pulley should never be loose. If it is loose, you should remove the pulley and make sure the KEY inside the center hole is still ok. Sometimes when the pulley gets loose it chews up the KEY and allows the pulley to turn on the crank. If the KEY is ok, just reinstall the pulley and tighten it.
I believe that your belt is probably just stretched and worn. The mower deck belt gets it’s tension from lowering the mower deck. the lower the deck the tighter the belt. Just replace the belt. I hope I’ve helped! Thank you! Dane

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

It originated as a tool and die maker (Modern Tool and Die Company). MTD`s main competitors are Stihl, Ariens, Briggs & Stratton, John Deere and Husqvarna.
A common cause of belt breakage is excessive grass clippings on the deck. Grass clippings can work their way under pulleys and deck covers, causing series problems. Make sure to clean off your deck after every mower use and follow manufacturer recommendations.
The highest dose of a drug or treatment that does not cause unacceptable side effects. The MTD is determined in clinical trials by testing increasing doses on different groups of people until the highest dose with acceptable side effects is found. Also called maximum tolerated dose.
What year was my equipment built? The 5th character of our 11 character product serial numbers will indicate the last number of the year that it was manufactured. Since 5th character in the example is a 4, the year of manufacture would be a year ending in 4.
Open or close the pulley to increase or decrease the diameter to the calculated size. Then tightly wrap the belt around the pulley again to measure the diameter to assure the right pitch has been achieved. After you`ve measured and adjusted the diameter to the required size, replace the pulley on the shaft.
The bigger your driven pulley (vs the driver), the slower it will turn but the more torque it will produce. The smaller your driven pulley (vs the driver), the faster it will turn but the less torque it will produce.
The factory settings for residential riding mower tires are generally 10 PSI for rear tires and 14 PSI for front tires.
Checking the belt tension

Use a ruler to find the mid-point on the belt`s longest run between pulleys. Use a ruler to find the midway point on the belt`s longest run between pulleys. Hold the belt between finger and thumb at this point and move it from side to side. See how much it deflects at the centre of the run.

There is no specific time length that mower belts need to be replaced. Some belts may last longer than others due to different operating conditions. One thing is for certain though, the more the mower is used, the sooner you will need to consider replacing the mower belt.
MTD makes all of the store brands (i.e., a mower that might have the Home Depot name on it), along with MTD, Dynamark, YardPro, Weed Eater, Noma, and Sears Craftsman. Murray makes MTD. MTD makes the low end (non-commercial) John Deere tractors.
MTD stands for “month to date.” It`s the period starting from the beginning of the current month up until now … but not including today`s date, because it might not be complete yet. You use MTD to give you information on a particular activity, results on a campaign, or so on, for this particular time period.
Just like YTD, MTD (month-to-date) is a period that starts at the beginning of the current month to the current date. It is a much shorter period compared to YTD, but it is very useful in reporting interim monthly performance. And, like YTD, MTD only covers the period ending at the last finalized business day.
MTD: measured total depth.
The MTD model number can be found on your equipment`s identification tag, located in one of several places on your machine. This tag is approximately 2“ x3“ in size and also includes the product name, customer service address, and phone number.
MTD`s regional brands include Troy-Bilt® in the Americas, Rover® in the Pacific, and WOLF-Garten® in Europe. The portfolio also includes Remington®, Yard Machines®, Columbia®, and MTD Genuine Parts® brands, all primarily sold in the Americas; and Robomow® which is sold in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East.

I have very recently purchased a 125/38″ MTD. Not sure how old but appears in reasonable condition. I have used it for about total of 4 hours over past two weeks. Mtd 19 In. 173 CC OHV 3-In-1 self propelled. Drive will not engage. Appears as if the belt is too loose even when the drive control bar is depressed all the way. Is this adjustable? This mower hasn’t enough hours on it to stretch the belt, it seems in great shape.
ANSWER : Between the handle and the connection to the drive system, look for adjustment screw or nut and screw on cable. Maybe even check the spring tension, if handle is spring loaded and the spring is stretched it will not engage drive system. If no adjustment to be found then you must get new belt. Good Luck…

The drive petal went loose. mower will not move under power. blades still turn.
ANSWER : Sounds like your motion contol linkage has disconnected itself. Depending on your tractor, this will either be a cable, or a metal rod.

In some rare cases the motion contol is engage by taking the slack out of drive belt by manipulating the position of an idler pulley. If this is the case… check for belt breakage (it may employee 2 belts, 1 for drive, and one for the blades).
