I have had exactly the same experience, and then also replaced the primer bulb, messed around with the carby mixtures, but so far it will not run for more than about 3 – 5 seconds! I have yet to resolve this problem.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
Usually this is the result of the cutting head being taken too close to objects, e.g. garden stones, paving edges, walls etc. The cutting line must be allowed to rotate freely and the correct diameter and type of line should be used.
The trimmer line might be the wrong size. If the trimmer line is too thick or too thin for the trimmer head, the trimmer line won`t feed. Make sure you are using the correct trimmer line for your string trimmer.
A blocked or dirty fuel filter

If your engine is trying to run, or starts and quickly stops, you might want to do a quick air filter check. You need air for your initial spark – and if oxygen cannot move readily through the system you will have problems both starting and keeping your whipper snipper running.

Thicker line withstands more contact, but check with the manufacturer for the right diameter line for your model – using the incorrect line can put excess strain on the motor.
Over time, the spark arrestor can become clogged with soot. If the spark arrestor is clogged, the edger may stall or run roughly. To unclog the spark arrestor, remove it and clean it with a wire brush. You can also replace the spark arrestor.
Worn clutch – Since the string trimmer clutch engages with one or more drive shafts attached to the trimmer head to rotate the head when the throttle trigger is depressed, a worn-out clutch may prevent the trimmer head from spinning. A new clutch assembly is relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
If your trimmer engine idles, but stalls on throttle, check the following parts: the gasket, primer bulb, fuel filter, air filter, fuel vent, fuel line, and carburetor. The repair and symptom guide will help you better identify the part needed to be replaced and how.
If the trimmer engine runs, but the trimmer head does not spin when the throttle is engaged, the clutch may be broken. The clutch prompts the drive shaft to start rotating once a certain rotational speed is reached and allows the engine to run without always rotating the drive shaft.
Ryobi refers to this as their REEL-EASY SPEED WINDER technology. Lock the head into the feed potion, feed in a 16` length of trimmer line and center it, then use the provided plastic crank like a spanner wrench on the outside of the head to wind the spool.

Most styles and weights are interchangeable, so you can use non-OEM (original equipment manufacturers) line. However, larger/heavier line may not fit every string trimmer. Replace old trimmer line every spring. It could turn brittle over the cold winter and break more easily.
Cable ties as strimmer cord

Have you ever been in the middle of tidying the edges of your lawn when your strimmer cord gives up on you? Cable ties offer a great solution but if your first choice of ties break too, consider using thicker ones.

Bump-feed string trimmers utilize a spring underneath the spool. When you tap or bump the head against the ground more line comes out. Automatic-feed string trimmers utilize an automatic-feeding system that pushes more line out whenever it gets too short.
There are a few possible reasons in which a string trimmer will excessively feed line. The incorrect type or size of line may be installed. Check the Operator`s Manual to verify that the correct trimmer line size for the model trimmer in question is being used. The indexing teeth, inside the inner reel, may be worn.
The spool has a line capacity of 6m enabling the user to hold a large amount of their 2.0mm trimming line, optimising time between refilling the spool head. Depolyment of line during use is easy with this spools bump feed head.
Diameter and thickness

Thinner threads varying from 0.065 to 0.8 inches work well on regularly maintained lawns. They can provide a nice clean trim to softer grass while whacking smaller weed plants. However, you`d ideally want to go for thicker options when working on dense vegetation and thick grass.

The clutch engages the clutch pads to spin the trimmer head. If the clutch assembly is defective, the clutch will not disengage the clutch pads, and the trimmer head will continue to spin, even at low speeds. If the clutch is defective, replace it.
Thicker trimmer line (up to 3mm) is designed for longer grass and can be used for medium-powered trimmers or brushcutters. The thickest trimmer line (3mm+) is usually twisted, serrated or square-shaped and is designed for long grass and low undergrowth.
The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the string trimmer for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance.
The switch turns the power off at the ignition module to stop the current flowing to the spark plug.

The air filter or exhaust port may be blocked. The trimmer may need lubrication and cooling fins or air passages may be blocked. A cordless trimmer`s battery or charger may be faulty.

Need to replace fuel lines on my Troy Bilt gas hedge trimmer. Where can I get replacement fuel lines… or better yet… what size are the lines and where can I buy a few feet of the lines. Note: I have reviewed the parts assembly and it would seem to indicate I have to replace the entire handle assembly (Part #1) instead of just buying replacement hose(s). Any help to resolve my issue would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance
ANSWER : Replacement fuel lines should be readily available at your local lawnmower repair shop. Your TroyBilt hedger uses fuel line that is 3/32″ (2.4mm) interior dimension, 3/16″ (4.8mm) outside dimension, with a 3/64″ (1.2mm) wall dimension.
Most manufacturers don’t offer replacement line, only fuel tank assemblies. Find your local shop, and try to get the TYGON brand…it is yellow. Tygon lasts the longest. You should be able to buy it by the foot for less than $2 per foot. You will need 2 feet of hose to replace both lines.

Make sure to clean the in-tank filter when replacing hoses.

Good luck.

Replaceing fuel line in polan 3300 chain saw – Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"
ANSWER : Hi owjbhend…
Use a piece of wire and insert it into the fuel line, then bend a hook in the end and hook it over the end of the fuel line…lubricate the fuel line with some vaseoline very lightly…about the first one inch of the fuel line and then use your fingers to start the fuel line into the tank, once you have the fuel line in the tank give enough to hook the fuel filter to and so it can be dropped back into the tank.
Below is a drawing of how to route the fuel lines.
