How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

What is the gas to oil ratio for Mantis 2-cycle engines? Always make sure you use the proper 50:1 mixture ratio; that is 2.6 ounces of oil to 1 gallon of 89 octane or higher gasoline.
All Troy-Bilt tillers are shipped without oil in the engine, so the first thing you must do before starting and using your new tiller is add oil and fill the fuel tank. The engines in these tillers run on unleaded gasoline. Oil is added separately and is not mixed with the fuel.
It`s not a good idea to use a tiller immediately before planting. This is because tilling introduces many air pockets into the soil which can result in less than ideal seed germination.
You should change your tiller oil at least every spring, but ideally after every 50 hours of operation. Between oil changes, check your oil level before each use to ensure there`s enough oil present. Small amounts of oil may burn off during use, so you may need to occasionally top it off.
Engine Maintenance

Because your tiller operates in dust and dirt, oil and filter changes are more critical than for lawn mowers and most other lawn and garden machines. At the very minimum, you should change the oil after 50 hours of use or at least once a year. If the oil looks dirty, change it more often.

A synthetic oil SAE 5W-30 is the best for very cold temperatures of -20 to as high as 120° F (-30 to 40° C) providing the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption. Use SAE 5W-30 for very cold temperatures of 40° F and below (5° C and below)
Features a powerful 2-cycle engine (requires gas/oil mix) with push-button priming for easy starts.
Running a 2-cycle with the wrong fuel to oil mixture can cause severe damage to your engine. Running the machine without any oil mixed in the fuel can cause severe damage to your equipment within just minutes. This damage is generally very costly to repair and is usually irreparable.
What is the ratio for 2-stroke fuel mix? Most modern petrol garden machinery requires a 50:1 ratio mix of petrol to oil. This means for every 1 litre of petrol you must mix 20ml of oil.
Avoid tilling in wet soil as soil compaction can occur and lead to poor root penetration in the growing season. If it rains, it`s best to wait a few days to allow soil to become semi-dry.
Disadvantages of Power tiller tractors:

Power tiller Tractors are more expensive and less efficient than traditional tractors. They also have a shorter lifespan.

For a tiller with a bladed wheel, push the tiller forward while it`s in the ground. This will rotate the blades and till the soil. For a tiller without the wheel, twist the tiller as you pull it straight out of the ground.
Put simply, a garden tiller is designed to break up hard, compact soil into loose, broken-up dirt that can then be used for planting.
One of the most common problems, especially because rototillers often sit unused for months, is stale fuel or a clogged carburetor. If you know you have fresh fuel, you can check for carburetor blockage by spraying a small amount of carb cleaner into the intake and attempting to start the engine.
Got a two-stroke engine? Any two-stroke motor oil made for air-cooled engines, such those in chainsaws, water pumps and weed eaters, will work perfectly in your two-stroke lawn mower engine. SAE 30 Oil: Engine oil best suited for warmer temperatures. Try top rated Pennzoil SAE 30 Motor Oil.
Use a mild solvent like the ones made by Twin Air or Maxima or a spray variety made specifically for foam filters. You can also buy mineral spirits and solvent with high flash points at auto parts stores.
To clean your Air Filter, start by turning it off and unplugging it. Make sure it`s closed; you shouldn`t be cleaning the inside. All exterior surfaces can be cleaned with a rag dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Do not spray liquids on the Air filter, as they may seep inside.
If your air filter is new and clean, another DIY solution is to put a bit of baking soda in your air ducts. When we say that, we literally mean, put a dish or the whole box of baking soda in your air duct and let it sit there. (The same way that you would place a box of baking soda in an offensive-smelling fridge.)
Front tine tillers are typically cheaper and can be used for weeding and blending soil. Mid-tine tillers are the easiest type to use because the engines and tines are directly in the middle of the tiller, easily distributing the weight and making them a great choice for gardeners with larger plots to till.
If the rotary tiller still doesn`t start:

Check that the fuel tank isn`t empty: if necessary, add fuel. The fuel must be fresh, of good quality and clean: make sure that no dirt, water or incompatible fuel (such as petrol-oil mixture, if the engine is a 4-stroke) gets into the tank.

Forward and reverse tine rotary tillers operate exactly as described. Forward rotating tines, like those on the RT3062, rotate forward on the shaft in the same direction the tractor is traveling. Reverse rotating tines, like those on the RT3062R, rotate on the shaft in the opposite direction the tractor is traveling.
A powered tiller or cultivator will make removing grass or sod easier. While purchasing power equipment will add to your total cost, choosing the right tool may save you time and labor.
With a powerful machine such as a tiller, you can level a large area and break new ground that will be used in creating a good planting bed or vegetable garden.
A tiller is ideal for use on larger gardens with hard and compacted soil, while a cultivator is perfect for smaller gardens with softer soil. Rotavators are the largest and most powerful of the three and are best suited for commercial gardens and farms.

How to prime a sand filter pump – INTEX Sand Filter Pump
ANSWER : It depends on the pump but most pumps have a filter bowl with a screw on cover – you need to fill this with water and start the pump. if the pipework connected to the pump and the filter are empty you will usually have to repeat this process a few times, but once the pump is primed it should start up without repriming in future – Hope this helps – Nigel

I have a husqvarna 323L string trimmer. I stored it after running the tank & carb dry for about two years. I fueled it, then started it, & it ran for a minute then died like I turned the switch off. Since it would not restart, I found the fuel filter had broken off the hardened fuel line & it sucked gummy crap out of the tank & into the carb. Failing at cleaning the carb, I finally put a new carb on it & replaced the pump, hoses & filter. It has ran good till this year. I winterized it with stabilizer & left it with a full tank over the winter. The gas in the tank was gone when I got ready to use it this year. I filled the tank with premix, checked for leaks, then started it. It would run fine for about half a tank, start idling poorly (lean) then cutoff & refuse to restart till I refilled the tank. I finally found the tank had cracks & was letting pressure out of the tank & apparently this was causing the carb to lose it’s ability to siphon gas out of the tank. So I replaced the tank which came with new hoses & a filter, which I properly installed to the carb. It cranked right up, but when it runs a half tank, the carb quits sucking gas out of the tank. When I pump to prime the carb, it moves the fuel into the carb, but the pump never gets hard like it does when I prime the carb when the motor is cold. I have to keep refilling the tank, prime, & then it starts & runs until the tank gets about half empty. The new fuel filter is down in the gas tank properly, but It will not run after it shuts off until I refill the tank & prime. I’m baffled. New tank, new hoses, new filter, new carb, & I can find no leaks in the fuel system. It runs strong. The 323L is a two-stroke & it always cranks on the second pull from cold on a full tank. Any ideas?

Toro model number 200065 won’t start. New gas, new spark plug, cleaned air filter. Doesn’t feel like fuel is in the primer bulb when I prime it.
ANSWER : Some toro primer bulbs don’t fill up with fuel but blow air into a chamber in the carb that has fuel in it so when you press the bulb, the air sprays fuel into the carb ( just a little) So since it won’t start, the bulb probably has a very small crack in it. replace it and then try it.
