Knew i had to change the battery this season, so did that immediately. Didn’t turn over, so I thought the starter was involved; ordered and installed that but I have the same result. On a hunch, I pulled out the spark plug to look at that, and viola’, fuel leaking out and a rapid rate..What next?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
MOst likely you needing clean and rebuild the carburetor as it is leaking into the engine.

And with so fuel in the cylinder I would suspect that the oil is over filled with gas and need changing too.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Low coil output, leaking injectors, or a leaking carburetor needle valve are the most common causes. If the sensor fails, fuel can also get on the spark plugs, but this is a rare occurrence. The fuel spark can also be traced back to a dirty filter in the rich air-fuel combination.
An airlock is one of the common causes why your mower won`t start after running out of fuel. An Airlock occurs when air replaces fuel in the fuel lines. As you refill your fuel tank, you could push the air towards your mower`s carburetor, which keeps the new fuel from reaching the engine.
If you pull the cord and hear your engine turn over, but your mower is not starting, the most common reasons for this are low fuel, a broken gas valve, or a bad choke fault. A broker spark plug could also be the culprit. You may also have to change the fuel pump if it does not get fuel to the ignition system.
If your Briggs & Stratton engine has a spark but won`t run, then it is most likely a problem with the gas or air intake in the engine. The spark on the spark plug ignites the gas in the piston, but if the air filter is clogged or the gas can`t flow, then the engine won`t start.
Don`t put fuel in the spark plug hole. Get a can of starting fluid and spray a quick whiff of fluid into the carb just before you pull the starter cord or push the starter button.
Possible causes are worn piston rings, faulty valve seals, failed gaskets or warped engine components. Deteriorated Spark Plug or Spark Plug Wires. Spark plugs that don`t fire, or misfire, cause unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.
If a mower is hard to start, it may be the result of a dirty carburetor and/or a clogged air filter. Use a screwdriver to remove the carburetor and clean any dirt out of it with a rag. Clean the air filter or replace it if it`s disposable.
If the ignition coil does not have spark, it`s time to check its wires. Use a test light to check the continuity on the signal wire and power wire on the ignition coil. If both wires are functional but the coil fails to produce spark, the ignition coil or the ignition control module is bad.
What causes fuel to leak into my engine oil? The fuel shut-off valve isn`t closed properly. Fuel float in the carburetor being stuck in the open position due to gumming (caused by stale fuel) or debris.
Your Spark Plugs are Loose

The spark plugs in your engine need to be tightened or else they can leak fumes into the car`s combustion chamber. This component sits right next to your HVAC intake, which is why you may start to notice a gasoline smell. Remove each spark plug and closely inspect the coils.

Causes of a carbon-fouled spark plug include a dirty air filter, excessive driving at low speeds, too rich of a fuel/air mixture, dirty fuel injectors or idling your vehicle for too long.

Oil leaking into the spark plug wells is an indictor of a fairly serious problem that should be inspected and repaired immediately. It is almost always due to a failing gasket or O-ring but can also be the result of a failing piston or worn valve guides.
