Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
In most areas there are usually a number of shops that deal with chain saws. Just take the chain in and they can usually sell bulk chain and will cut it to length and put on the master link for you. That’s usually better than trying to figure out what size/model to purchase from a hardware store.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Most saws use 0.325″, 3/8″, or 0.404″ pitch, with 1/4″ less common. Most consumer saws use a type of 3/8″ chain called “low profile”. We call it Picco. A few older saws use 1/2″ pitch chain.
Standard chainsaw bar lengths are between 8–24 inches (20–61 cm). The true length of the chainsaw bar will always be longer than the cutting length.
72 = 3/8 pitch .050 gauge or 1.3mm. 73 = 3/8 pitch .058 gauge or 1.5mm.
The gauge of a chainsaw chain is the thickness, or width, of the drive lugs. Most chainsaws use 0.050″ (1.3 mm) and 0.058″ (1.5 mm) gauge chains. 0.043″ (1.1 mm) and 0.063″ (1.6mm) gauge chains are less common.
Roller chain is made in several sizes, the most common American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards being 40, 50, 60, and 80. The first digits indicate the pitch of the chain in eighths of an inch, with the last digit being 0 for standard chain, 1 for lightweight chain, and 5 for bushed chain with no rollers.
Chains for one and multiple speeds differ from each other by the outer width. The more “speeds” a chain is designed for, the thinner the outer plates and shorter the pins are (and they protrude less) – so the outer chain width is smaller (i.e. chain is narrower).
Chainsaw chains come in three main varieties. They come in full chisel, semi chisel and low profile chains, with each being used for different tasks. The chisel refers to how the teeth are cast on the chain itself – which then determines how the chain cuts through the wood.
050 Inch Pitch with 1 Bonus Sharpening Files; Heavy Duty Carbon Steel Chains Fit Most Major Chainsaw Brands(2 Pack)
Typically a chainsaw with a shorter bar around 14” and smaller is enough for property maintenance, trimming, pruning, and cutting down broken tree limbs. On the other hand, cutting down small trees, thick branches, and cleaning up storm damage will need a longer bar around 16”-20” to make the job easier and safer.
Several manufacturers produce chainsaw chains, and the different brands are not interchangeable with all models. If you replace your chain with another brand, you must know the exact gauge, length, and pitch of the old chain. Installing the wrong chain can result in bodily injury or damage to the machine.
Basically, it`s the size of, and spacing between links. For the same number of links, a 3/8” chain is longer. This also means that the shape of the sprocket at the motor and at the tip of the sword are different. 3/8” and 0.325” chains are NOT interchangeable.
A: These are two different sizes (. 007) and are not interchangeable on the bar. It is the thickness of the drive links and the distances inside the bar rails. You must match the pitch and gauge with the bar and chain.

I was using the saw as a chain saw last weekend to cut up an old tree stump when the chain came off. I don’t know how to access it to put it back on and don’t have a user manual. The saw belonged to my late father and I don’t know if he even kept the manual.
ANSWER : You will have to remove the cover on the side the chain bar goes into. There should be one or two nuts holding the cover on the side. The is also a chain tension adjuster you may have to loosen to put it back on. Make note of the direction of the teeth on the chain. It is an directional chain. The tension adjuster is usually a flat head screw on the front side right beside the chain bar.Unless it is a really old saw, manuals are available from most manufacturers for free download. See if you can locate a brand name and model number.

Chain saw chain is loose
ANSWER : Loosen the side cover nuts, then turn the adjuster CW to bring the chain up to the lower edge of the bar, then check to see if the chain will move fairly easily by hand. Tighten the clamp nuts and recheck tension. If chain seems to get loose quickly again, it may not be sharpened correctly causing heat to build in the chain. You should see no reflection of light from the cutting edges if filed correctly and the saw should require very little pressure for it to cut rapidly. Hope this helps!
