ed to switch the fuel but that did not help. It won’t start again before 15 minutes or so. Any advice?

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
You probably have a baked ignition coil. The good news is they arent too expensive to buy and you can change it yourself with only some simple tools and a thin piece of cardboard!

You need to take the recoil cover off your mower and look at the coil area too….make sure you dont have the remains of an animal nest there. This is usually the cause of excessive coil heating.

Sometimes just taking the nest out solves the problem…but many times the coil damage is done. So, you can buy a new coil and swap it out while you have the cover off. The only special thing you need to do when you replace the coil is properly gap it to the magnets on the flywheel. This is where the thin cardboard comes in. I use the box the coil came in….cause it poker deck card thickness. You use it between the coil and the flywheel during the tightening and the you just slip it out when you are done. Thats it! Put the cover back on the mower and get to cutting!

Good luck and be careful!

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Stale fuel, dirt, and debris are the most common cause of outdoor power equipment not starting or running properly. If you store equipment with untreated gas in the tank, it can lead to engine damage.
Oil capacity is typically 15oz or 18oz*. Check oil level during the season and add when necessary. Change engine oil every 50 hours or annually, whichever comes first.
If the engine has proper maintenance, spark plug and oil changed every year, then it will last about 15–20 years. Always use Premium (no alcohol added) fuel. If you use regular fuel the carburetor might dry up and plug the many circuits in the carburetor.
You Lose Power in the Middle of Mowing:

Here`s why this happens and what you can do: Dirty Air Filter on Your Lawn Mower: Clean or replace. Dirty Spark Plug: Clean or replace. Build Up of Clippings & Debris: Clean underside of your lawn mower deck as noted above.

A worn, dirty, oily, or improperly gapped spark plug can cause a weak spark, and this can lead to a misfire. A quick way to check that the spark plug is functioning properly is to carefully remove the spark plug wire while the engine is running.

There`s not much difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40 motor oil. What sets them apart has more to do with temperature fluctuations and engine load. For moderate weather, either engine oil grades should work fine.
Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines. Check oil level regularly.
Briggs and Stratton is a huge company and has a notable presence overseas. Apart from cheap labor costs in China, the Asian market is quite significant for the American manufacturer. However, that`s nothing to worry about — most of its engines sold in the US are actually made in the US.
You want the engine that always starts easily – with the reliability and power to cut through tall, thick grass every time. Briggs & Stratton has built its reputation on reliable, innovative – and easy-to-maintain engines.
Fuel. Most small engine problems are fuel related, so that`s the first thing to check. Is there fuel in the tank and is the tank shutoff valve open? While this may seem obvious it is likely every owner of a small engine has, at one time or another, tried to start it with an empty tank.
Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. See your operator`s manual for recommended spark plug change intervals. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly. An improper spark plug gap could lead to engine knocking and poor performance.

A dead battery is the most common reason why engines fail to start up. A common reason for batteries to fail is drain. Your car`s battery typically expends a small portion of its storage to start your car up, and then recharges from your alternator as you move.

My mower is about 2 months old. Haven’t had any issues until last night. I think I ran out of gas (maybe not, it was getting dark). I filled it up, and won’t stay running. Barely starts unless it is tilted way back (like handle on the ground all the way back), then it runs like a champ. If it is level, it will barely run until it dies. This is on concrete, and there is nothing underneath.
ANSWER : Hello,It sounds like there is sediment in the carb bowl. Remove the gas line from the carb and plug the line with a phillips head screwdriver. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the bowl and carefully tap on the bowl to loosen it without damaging the rubber gasket. Clean the bowl, and blow the ports in the bolt out. Raise and lower the float inside the bowl space to make sure that it is working freely. Re-assemble making sure to seat the rubber gasket properly. If there is sediment in the bowl, you might also consider an inexpensive in-line gas filter ($6 at Lowe’s, etc.).Best regards,–W/D–
